In the NFL playbooks I comb over, there are plenty of terms I don't yet understand (IE: for defensive fronts "wink" "diamond" "tom" etc) to name a few. Does anybody have a website for a glossary or something similar?

A lot of those terms are specific to the team for the most part. There won't be a glossary.

I used to coach for a guy who coached in the NFL and he had a bunch of playbooks from the places he went. There are some differences place to place- cover 7 at a lot of places was cover 1 robber, while for a few others was a zone, some terms hit universal for all- "Tom" was a loop game between the nose and DT in which the 3 tech picks the outside hip of the guard and the nose loops into the B gap then the DT pops into the A.
But as cited above, a good number of those terms will end up being team specific.

As such, combing through playbooks can be interesting, but not really impactful to your coaching career. I would suggest that the biggest thing you can glean from looking through random playbooks is see how they are organized and structured which may lead to you doing a better job of systematically teaching your system.

Does anyone have a glossary for the universal terms? It's a bit frustrating that the playbooks don't have more of a glossary for what the terms would mean.

coachranger Outside of Tackle, Guard, Center etc. there are very few "universal" terms. There are two or three (at least) defensive methods of numbering techniques. What is a 1 technique to one coach might be a 2i technique to another for example. What someone might call "Storm" might be "Fire" to someone else; what might be Cover 6 for one coach might be Cover 8 to another, etc.

Football is kind of tricky like that, to learn the "language" the best bet is total immersion as opposed to trying to study. Lots of times you have to decode it, like an elementary student learning to read has to decode words and using context clues to build vocabulary. You just need to develop the context. Unfortunately, looking at playbooks probably is a bad way to do it. Just feel free to ask here, it will come quickly.

Ok, thanks for the help, I've been studying playbooks for a while and been frustrated that I felt like I hadn't been learning much. I'll start asking more questions that pop up, thanks coaches.

Why are you studying playbooks? They are not really instructional in nature, especially as stand alone items. If I gave you 3 French Novels, would you learn any french looking through them?
