How many do you need to dress to feel comfortable fielding a team?

22 would be what i would want at minimum. But 18-20 could work depending on the kids. We had an issue a few years back where our JV had 15 kids but they were all pretty solid if they had gotten a few extra kids they would have been fine.

I assume you mean a minimum number.
Without allowing for cross-training, mine was 17 ("A pair and a spare"):
3 WR 3 T 3 G 2 C 2 TE 2 QB 3 RB
3 DE 3 DT 3 OLBer 2 MLBer 3 CB 3 S
Offensively if we were short a TE or WR we had some flexibility in formations-personnel (20 or 22 vs. 21 for ex.)

You only need 11, if you've got the RIGHT 11.

Seems like there are two "numbers."
There's the number you need to play a game (sure, you only need 11 at a time to field a team, but what happens the first time somebody gets hurt ... or, got forbid, tired.) Then there's the number you need to have a decent practice. If you don't have enough kids to line up 11 v 11 once in awhile, you're going to be doing an awful lot of improvising.

You are of course correct.
I was being facetious when I posted "You only need 11..."
A lot of schools practice Varsity and JV together which can mitigate the problem of not being able to do any 11-on-11.
If you have at least 17-18 you can still do Inside-Outside, Half line, 7-on-7 (half field at a time) that allows you to somewhat simulate Team.
Biggest issue there would be in Kicking Game.

Our issue is always the JV team. We did away with our Frosh team 5 years ago. If we get to that point on the varsity we will bring players up from the JV and fold the JV. Which is happening in this area, hear about it more each season. So the question for us is what is the number to play a game at the JV level? I once cancelled a JV game when we had 16 but I knew that 2 OL would not last past the 2nd/3rd quarter and 3 of the players would be a risk to themselves and/or others if they were on the field.
The AD here is of the opinion that if we have it on the schedule we are playing it. Had a JV game last year, against a very good team, where our Frosh OLB, a girl, who was good, had to play C for us (we're Pistol) because the OL we had were 'hurt'. We had 17 active for that game and lost 3 during the game, kids that should not have been on the field in that situation against that team.
I understand that all it takes to play the game is the right 11, but that really forces the question of 'right'. When you are talking the younger levels it can be pretty harsh because you don't have the players developed to the point that you are confident that they will be able to Ironman the game.
I have this discussion each season with the coaches, and its one that they don't want to have, they all have that Ironman mentality. But as the HC there is a different issue when you know you will have to put kids on the field that are not ready for prime time to play the game. As I was told when I first started, you never want to be in the position of having to say "Yes, your honor, on several occasions I knowingly put players on the field that were not sufficiently prepared to be able to protect themselves or others..." Or any other phrase that begins with "Your honor...".

I've always liked to have at minimum 17. I did head coach a whole year of high school JV football in Texas where we only had 13 players the entire season (really 12 as we had 1 get hurt early on). This team was made up entirely of freshmen playing against a JV schedule (we had to play other teams' JV roster/team). I absolutely loved those kids. We got laughed at each Thursday getting off the bus. Went 9-1 that year...

Small-school football program here (enrollment is about 350 total students), I think the magic number is 10-15 per class. If we get that consistently year in and year out, we are going to be pretty competitive.
What hurts is when we have a really good class but the classes behind them are low on numbers. Last year's senior class had about 15 kids and 13 of them were good to great players. We were really good. Went 12-1. Last year's junior class only had about 8 kids and maybe 4 of them are good to great. We won't be anywhere near as good this fall.
So I think the key is to try and sustain consistent numbers in each class.

30 kids I can get through a practice without having a WR play scout team DL or DL playing scout team WR.

Small rural school with 350 students.
Out for summer football.
High 20’s on our varsity. Mid 30’s on JV.
Yearly to get by and have a chance to compete.
A minimum of 20 on Varsity, and mid 20’s on JV.

How many do you need to dress to feel comfortable fielding a team? Two major factors that should be considered as you attempt to solve this equation... (1) what style of offense and defense fits your kids, and (2) what can you efficiently teach.

Also, what you have in school and how many are willing to play.

Our first season at our current school (250 students) we had 17 on Varsity and 17 on JV and both teams had nice seasons we were down to about 14 on Varsity by the playoffs due to injuries but at that point some of the younger boys could contribute. Since that time I have had that mental threshold of needing 34 boys to be able to functionally field two teams although I'm sure it could be as low as 30 and still make it work. With that said it is ideal to be closer to 24 per team. In larger schools situations it has always been the agenda to have 20 Seniors and over 40 in the program as we were big believers in getting the majority of the boys on one side of the ball. In my two situations 1. we were likely never going to get to that number due to some factors in the Community and if we had it would only be for arbitrary years, the other situation we got to it and could see the impact it was going to have on our program.
