Why do high school football seasons include 9 games? Why not an even 10? Is there some reason that the season is 9 games long?

In NY section 6 we have seven regular season games. If you go to the state championship game you will have played thirteen games. If you don't make the playoffs you have the opportunity to play at least nine games.

California has ten games, but if you make it to the state championship you may play up to 16 games which is way too many. It is common for teams that play that late for basketball players to miss up to two weeks of games.

Yeah, we need to get rid of the silly state bowl games (which arent really championships anyways, but just selection committee type bowls). I liked the previous model where we ended after the CIF championships |

It is too big, thats why there are 10 different CIF regions (essentially 10 different states). Really they could probably re-align them and make it 6-8 or so, but they need to just stick with the model of ending at CIF champ. |

We play in the Northern section that goes up to Oregon, and there is no reason for us to be traveling to San Diego to play a game. Glad the CA coaches agree, I have met coaches who like this model. |

NC has 12 weeks to play 11 regular season games. If you play 11 the gate for 1 must go to the state endowment fund. If you don’t agree to that you play 10. If you play 11 then you would play 16 if you make state championship.

I agree with you Section title was THE carrot... it is our pie in the sky... ultimate goal We aim for league title, practice on Thanksgiving, win section... the rest would be gravy Many in CCS are far too concerned with beyond the section... CIF all about that money Let kids play 12 games and go home to play hoops, soccer, wrestle... Same thing for Winter teams too... |

SC football season is 18 weeks long.
3 preseason
-- can petition to play a week early, then you have a 'bye' in the season
10 games/10 weeks
--used to be 11 if you were in the top classification, 4 rounds of playoffs
5 rounds of playoffs
--smaller divisions used to play 4
To calculate the beginning of the season, you counted back 18 weeks from the 1st weekend in December.

Texas has 10 regular season games. If you make it to the state title you play 16 games. And all state championship games are played in the same stadium the same week, including the six man games, in AT&T stadium. |

Arizona season is 10 games with 11 weeks to play them, the first week called 0 week. If you make the playoffs is could be a total of 14 games including State Championship.

I miss 10-game regular seasons. Hell, for the majority of teams here in Missouri (we play 9 games), week 10 games (first week of 8-team “district” tournament) are complete blowouts and even worse, rematches. We had a team play the same team two weeks in a row and lose 70-0 in both games. What fun is that?

Indiana had 9 regular season games when I was there, but everyone makes the playoffs so guaranteed 10 games.
I think Florida was 11 weeks to play 10 like others have said.
I am in South Carolina now so Coach Woodall described that which I didn't know for sure how it worked before his post.

Tennessee, like a lot of states, gives you 11 weeks to play 10 games with a 5 round playoff immediately after the season. Our season starts in early August and ends after Thanksgiving. The 11 game season in NC actually screwed up our playoff brackets a few years ago. A few years ago a team from our state (Tennessee) played a team from NC that finished 5-6. Since that team had a losing record after 11 games, it was initially counted against the team who played them (we were using a complex, BCS-style points system at that time) and caused a screw up in who got in to the first round. The state announced the wrong team was in. Then on Tuesday (after the school who got left out threatened to sue), they reversed course and told the team who was initially preparing for a game that their season was done, then sent the other team on a 4 hour bus ride for a 1st round road game. |

I think in Michigan it's a 9 game regular season so we can still have 32 team brackets for playoffs and still be done by Thanksgiving weekend. To make it 10 we'd have to start even earlier in the summer.

We have 9 in NJ with a "bowl game" as the 10th for the teams that don't make the playoff. You play another team that didn't make it.
NJ has a kind of weird Cali-style sectional model too where people claim a "state championship" despite never playing a team from the other part of the state.

And i'm going to disagree with carookie and PIGSKIN11.
California isn't too big. Thats not the problem. At all. And it SHOULD have a state championship.
Follow the models of Texas (which is bigger geographically) and Florida (which is similar and not really convenient travel wise), NC, etc.
Create classifications based on size -
Probably 3 (maybe 4?) non-public classes
Probably 8 (even 10 would be fine) public classes. The lower classes should have less teams, and 1 less round of the playoffs.
Split State into geographic quadrants for playoffs - so you're not playing anyone outside of that quadrant until the semifinals.
REDUCE THE NUMBER OF TEAMS MAKING THE PLAYOFFS!!! That is the key to it. Playoffs should be difficult to get to and an honor to do so. Make it by how you finish in league, some points system, or even a combo (my preference - like Florida - Where winning your league gets you in automatically, points determine at large teams)
If you want to collect $ and make people happy or whatever then shoot, have bowl games or whatever for teams not making playoffs.
You could also reduce the regular season to 9 games. I am sure you can determine the legit playoff teams in 9 games. |
