Just heard that HUDL is about to change its Game storage policy. Has anyone heard anything similar?

Yeah it is all over Twitter. Sounds like a serious downgrade of storage and a money grab.

it is crap...
but when you are a monopoly you can do whatever you want...
We need to all look at alternatives and see how we can all find another option...

My guess is that they’ve found plenty of people tagging game video that is not an actual game.
Still not a good look for Hudl, but does it matter if you don’t have any competition?

From the HUDL twitter account;
Great question, Coach. Your team will get 150 hours of storage. The average American football game is 40 minutes trimmed down; which means you could store about 225 games. With an average of 11 games a year would be ~20 seasons. We want you to store what matters to you! KK
And all video is now counted.
Another good question! Having two angles would double the amount of video and would give you ~10 seasons you could store. We'd be happy to talk over the phone with you for more details on your situation; give us a call when you have a chance. KK

As I stated in a Twitter feed, I know of a few teams that get bare minimum Hudl and use Sky Coach for everything. They just use Hudl for film trade. A lot of bigger schools in this area are doing this.

It's actually a price increase AND change to storage allocation. Your own games aren't stored for free any longer. Here's the post on Hudl - www.hudl.com/pricing/2019-updatesThe truth is Hudl will still be keeping ALL our games online so they can sell their recruiting system to colleges and advertisers. This is just a way to squeeze more and more $$$$ out of us.
Proof again that MONOPOLY'S ARE NEVER GOOD! This type of strong-arming usually results in alternatives emerging - let's all hope!

Most of us still have alternatives in the way cd burners hiding out in the corner of our coaches offices somewhere, but we gladly let it collect dust and cobwebs because of the service provided by HUDL. I am not condoning HUDL's price increase, but I think the service they provide has made vast improvements to the coaching experience and to completely vilify them based on their ability to create highly demanded platform may not be fully warranted. I do agree that if the price increase is unfair it will open the door to competition, which will force HUDL to revisit policy change or lose customers.

Storage of our own games has always been unlimited because Hudl re-sells our games to college recruiters (Hudl Recruit) and highlights to advertisers (MaxPreps, Gatorade, etc.). All our old games will remain on Hudl.com for recruiters and advertisers, yet they now want to also charge us high school coaches. My contention is Hudl would not do this if we had a reasonable alternative.

But I don't think their actions are to the point that I would agree that HUDL nor all monopolies are completely evil. It sucks but if what HUDL offered was not a great product, then it wouldn't have gained the market share it holds.

Interesting tweet from SkyCoach about working on an alternative to Hudl. We're going to them for replay anyway... I think their phones might be busy Competition is always good for everyone involved.

KK What they don't say is that teams typically have multiple games of scout film. So it's not 11 games a year, it's really more like 35-50. Conservatively, that's 6 seasons. That should still be plenty, but it won't satisfy people who horde film (guilty).

I'm disappointed in Hudl but not surprised. Between what I pay for Hudl and Hudl Sideline its getting expensive. Not to mention my sideline doesn't work 50% of the time.

I don't get the uproar. Storage of video costs money. The more video the more servers required. Costs passed on to high schools.

I don't get the uproar. Storage of video costs money. The more video the more servers required. Costs passed on to high schools. Just storing the video is trivial, though. 150 hours of video (their number) takes roughly 1TB of storage space. A bottom-line 1 TB drive costs $50; a high quality server grade 1 TD HDD costs $290. This is a one-time cost, per team, to store their 150 hours of video.
It's far more likely that they think they can downgrade their service without losing customers and pocket the margins, paying bonuses to their management team. That's how business works in America: give people as little as you possibly can, and take everything that isn't nailed down.

We had a former military guy on staff that was heavy into computers (like stuff you see on Movies smart) and he figured out a way to make Sky Coach do the same as Hudl when it came to break down. Even got it done during games. I.e. Hash, D&D, odd/even front etc... Sometimes it was more info than I needed but we did it and it worked.

If you want more storage, do you have to upgrade to Gold and pay another $700?

I would like to learn more about sky coach as an alternative to HUDL.
it looks as if all that's missing from it is the breakdown data/ report creation/ Hudl Playbook (all of which can be done elsewhere).
Does it store individual plays as clips or is it one large game file?

Nor do I, but if we needed more storage back then we bought another pack of tapes or filing cabinet to hold them. That is something lost in this whole thing is what else is offered by Hudl, it's not just somewhere to store film or mark clinic tape as game footage or 500 college games you have stored under game film you use to show how smart you are online, it's a whole package that makes everything easier.

Does it store individual plays as clips or is it one large game file? I would as well. Right now I use google drive and sheet and do everything by hand. The problem is when something breaks I might spend a weekend fixing it. But unlimited storage from work, and video in as high of resolution as your camera will go.
