I am a new coach and I want to learn. I figure if I ask one question a day by the time football season comes around I should have greatly expanded my knowledge of the game. I guess my first question would be this: What should I be wary of? Kids, Parents, Administrators or anything else that can come at you as a coach. How do I CYA?

uh, something to ponder when replying to parent's reponses via email. try to limit responsed in writing to things such as...."i would be glad to discuss this with you on my conference at 2 pm"....or, "please call me at 555-5555 to discuss this in-depth"........NEVER put a conversation in writing, or at least not one that is very detailed. parents will inevitably misinterperat what you say and write so it's better to simply have the spoken word. nothing in the evidence form that a principal or school board member can also mistake. plus, gives you the ability to 'crawfish' if needed...lol

If in doubt, seek the old guys out. They have weathered the storm for a reason
If they are not around and it a sticky situation, do what is in the best interest of the kid (should be doing this most of the time anyhow) this is the ultimate cya i can think of
after a couple of years of law school, the red flags go up pretty quick in my mind, honest mistakes with a kid's best interest in mind can cya a long way

Huey, I agree. I would go as far to have a parent conference. Parents want nothing but the best for their children, which is understandable. However, you need to lay down ground rules. After coaching for 24 years I have seen it all. Now that I coach at a jr. college and recruit HS players it really opens your eyes, too the issue of parents and athletics.

we got a rule that we will not have a parent conference without meeting these 2 criteria:
1. player must meet with coach first before any meeting with a parent will take place 2. player must be present in the parent-coach meeting

be surprised how few parent meetings you have if you make them follow #1 first. parent will want to meet with me. i will say, let me talk to johnny first to see what we can work out. then, johnny tells parent "don't worry 'bout meeting anymore". or parent will want to meet and johnny will say 'coach & i already met....here's the deal....no need for you to meet'

It's amazing when you tell a parent that his/her child isn't a D1 athlete and their jaw drops to the floor. Your kid is 5'9, 160lbs with average speed and strength. They think because they were an all star in optimist that they are D1 caliber. It's really amazing sometimes...
I saw a post on another board with the percentages of HS athletes that play DI, DIAA, DII, etc...I wish I still had those numbers.
Anyone have those stats???
