Retirement... It's been awesome! No parents, no practice, no weekends spent in the fieldhouse. Hope that y'all all get to enjoy it one day!

I thought my favorite part of being a coach would be designing the offense(no kidding, I still love drawing stuff up). It's actually the kids.

My favorite part of coaching is being part of a group of people working towards a common goal. The pursuit of improvement and purposefulness of the endeavor makes the game rewarding beyond the gridiron.
I am not a huge fan of football outside of coaching. I don't watch the NFL and only watch a minimal amount of college football. I do love to study coaches (just found Parcells book at Dollar Tree and considered it a steal).
But ultimately being part of something is the best.

I thought that my favorite part would be becoming a HC and running my own program. Turned out that it was NOT becoming a HC and having to worry about stuff like ordering jerseys and buses. Oh yeah, I liked the free tickets to college games.

I thought my favorite part of being a coach would be winning(not really). It’s actually the process. I agree. I enjoy watching all of the time and planning put into practice pay off during games. It's frustrating when they don't but that's just another part of the process I like. Identify what went wrong, drill it in practice and make it work. I love to win (who doesn't) but some of my best memories from a season have come during close losses. The kids executed well, busted their humps, but we just couldn't win the game. Those close losses tell us a lot about the character of our kids and whether we're doing things right. We're taking care of business if they've bought in and fight until the end of the game.

I thought it would be having a better scheme than you.
It turns out it’s having better players than you.

When I got to go to a former players senior day presentation, after his mom and family couldn't make it.
It's my single favorite thing I've done. Not just with coaching.

Watching arguments on Twitter about scheme/OL play/softness/yelling/workout videos I thought my favorite part of coaching would be designing and calling defense. My favorite part of coaching is the relationship between yourself and players in the hallways at school. Also, calling plays against an open C gap and watching other coaches lose their poo on their own players.

I thought it would be the x and o's. It turned out to be the stories, the jokes, the team meals, watching kids grow up. The picture perfect days in the sun in spring and summer, the crisp air in the fall with the falling leaves. The sounds of popping pads and the bands, the feeling of wet turf and the smell of cut grass, and maybe most of all the emotions on Friday night.

I thought it would be designing some face melting offensive plays. Now I think it's the first beer after a big win.
In reality it's watching kids who sucked turn into decent players, going to former player's weddings, seeing them have kids, watching our current players with my kid, all that mushy stuff is awesome.

I thought my favorite part of being a coach would be watching my great athletes make plays on the field. It's actually watching my average athletes make plays on the field and seeing my gifted athletes have success off the field.

It's when a kid who you coached 20, 30, or 40 years ago recognizes you and tells you what a positive influence you were on their lives.
Or when you coach the son of a former player because he wouldn't think of having his kid play for anybody else.
And when a former player becomes a Head Coach of his own team.

Some great (and some hilarious) responses. I thought it would be winning games and collecting awards, it's actually helping kids grow up to be men of purpose. And like bignose said, when a former player comes to you years later and tells you that you helped him become the man he is today, there's nothing greater to me.

I thought it would be developing athletic ability but it is actually building relationships with the athletes. I've been coaching for 27 years. I have former athletes from many years ago that I often visit either via phone calls or social media.

I thought it would be winning. But after I while I hated losing more than I enjoyed winning. I expect to win Bc of the work we put in. My favorite pet has become the relationships built and hanging out with the players and other coaches.

The thread about missing family made me think of it, but there is not a better feeling in the world for me than after a game, win or lose, when my wife and son come down to the field and get to join the world for a brief moment. When my son was a toddler, he would want me to chase him around with his little ball. Now, he's 10 and he wants me to throw him routes to score on. Whether frustrated or content after the game, when my wife says "hey sweetie" and hugs me then my son asks "dad can we play for a bit?" it always makes the moment better.

My wife is always there walking out on the field and she hugs and kisses me and tells me how good I look (she lies but that’s ok) and what a great job I did. My daughter who is at the stage in her life where daddy and his rules ain’t cool comes running ahead of her and jumps into my arms not even knowing if we won or lost. Just glad to see her daddy for the first time since Wednesday night. Even when we lose makes life better for a few minutes.

When a teacher comes up to you and tells you your football kid did this or didn't do this in class.
I've never went to them bitching about how their social studies student missed a tackle or block.
