I don’t know if a school in Arkansas that doesn’t have one. I thought it was a thing everywhere Never heard of it until I got into online coaching forums. And I didn't realize other states didn't have an athletic period until I did the same.

We have a weights class that any kid can enroll in but we also have an advanced weights class that our athletes take. This is for 10th-12th, freshman cannot enroll in either class. Advanced weights is during 6th hour and athletics is 7th.

School starts at 8:15. They have football 4th block year round all four years. They get a PE credit for it. Wow. So the kids are in actual academic settings from 8:15- 1:06 (minus lunch, minus time between classes) 5 days a week for 4 years? I guess since it does eliminate a bit of the transition time waste because of fewer classes, but taxpayers haven't complained that kids are basically going half day? I've said this before, but there is pretty much nothing I hate more than any phrase involving "taxpayer" and some sort of complaint. News flash to Johnny tax payer. We all pay taxes and his tax dollars don't entitle him to anymore of an opinion on a matter than anyone else. Also, the tax payer - is generally unqualified and under educated on whatever matter they are bitching about.

To show you how different things are, not only do we not have an athletic period but we have no elective PE classes. Because of budget cuts high schools in our district now only have the minimum number of PE classes that are required by law (9th and 10th graders). No one on our coaching staff teaches PE. In fact, no PE teacher at our school coaches a sport. We have five paid positions on the football staff including the HC. Only two of ours were in the school and one was a security officer who was on duty until 5. He could come to practice but was on call at the school. There are no freshman or middle school teams. We have varsity and JV. 8th graders can play JV. Youth teams are independent of the schools. We're not a small rural school district. We're in a city of 135,000 in a metro area and our high schools have over 1500 students each.

They have lobbyist that have helped us keep our athletic period.

I teach the one period of weight lifting we have here. It's split about 50-50 between kids who want to lift and kids who were dumped in it because there was no other class to throw them in. Sometimes I get lucky and get a football kid. I had a friend who was excited that he'd convinced admin to start an elective weights class, then the same thing happened to him. The vast majority of my weight training classes have been like this. Hence why I avoid teaching them at all costs. They toss ne'er-do-well upper-classmen in there that need a credit and they either end up written-up until they drop the class or they fail. I'm dealing with it right now and it's irritating the hell out of me. I put up with more crap from kids and parents because of that weight training period than my math classes. I'm moving on to greener pastures next year and, in the interview, they asked me if I'd be willing to teaching some weight training. I told them that I'd prefer to teach straight math but I'd do what they needed me to do. I also forewarned them that my weight training classes aren't easy "As" and that any kid who didn't fall in line would be in trouble with me, daily. They don't have me teaching weights next year.

But I don't think many are that under educated or unqualified when it comes to looking at a property tax bill (National Average is 1.2% of Assessed value of home) and finding out that a large portion of that bill is going to a school system that finds kids playing sports going to class a little more than 4 hours out of a 7 hour day. That is a far cry from Johnny tax payer telling the cop who pulled him over "I pay your salary"

You're in class for only 3 hours a day. Yet those kids (sports + band) are consistently our best academic kids, our highest test scores, our college track kids.

We have 3 football classes: Varsity, JV, and Freshman. I teach the JV since I'm JV HC, HC has the varsity and freshman classes.
I also teach 4 regular weight training classes with a mix of athletes/randoms. I'm working to change one of those classes to an athletic period for athletes in general, looks like it's happening for next year.
We're very outside the norm for our area and for California in general at it shows in our results.

We're very outside the norm for our area and for California in general at it shows in our results. We only have one boys' and one girls' athletic period. All boys and all sports are in one class period. This includes football, baseball, basketball, and track. The only boys not in an athletic period are our distance / cross country boys are not in an athletic period. The same goes for the girls. On the boys side the majority of the track kids are football kids. We do get boys from other sports. Every boy goes through the same in-season and off-season weight workout. It works for us. All programs are successful, either winning the district and / or advancing into the playoffs. Because we only use one period they have the rest of the school day for academic classes. Also, in Texas they have to have a certain number of credits to be eligible for athletics.
