I coached in a private Christian school where there were strict rules on how you could wear your hair. In every rendering of Jesus I’ve ever seen he had long hair.
In every rendering of Jesus I've ever seen he looks like a white guy from 1968.

If anyone discovered if there is a specific length of hair that makes someone faster or tackle better, then I'll care about hair length.
I've coached with guys who had hair ranging from shaved head/ buzz cut/ and pretty thick and bushy hair and beard.
If I'm making a list of the top 50 things there is to worry about, hair is probably going to come in around 75 or 80.

I have seen kids with super long hair get yanked down by it before....I guess it could be a safety concern too if they cant keep it within their helmet.

reminds me of a John Wooden story with Bill Walton: everyone on UCLA basketball team had to shave.. Bill Walton (star center for UCLA):" Coach I am not going to shave... My style is to have a beard" CoachWooden:" Bill we are really going to miss you" Walton shaved!!!! obviously you cant do this in all circumstances...But I do like the discipline part of it When you’re a 10-time champ with 10 other 5-star players on the team you can have any rules you want!

Does anyone have a team rule about hair length? When do you enforce it? What do you do if they don’t cut their hair? this cant be a real post right ? There are a lot of guys playing on TV every saturday/sunday with long hair or dreads, they seem to be doing just fine

Does anyone have a team rule about hair length? When do you enforce it? What do you do if they don’t cut their hair? My school (private) has a dress code. There is no problem with hair length. Something I never want to hear..."Coach treats us like REAL men. Our hair can be long...he lets us wear earrings, too." Being a member of a TEAM requires some uniformity. If hair protrudes anywhere from the helmet...GET A HAIRCUT! My rule.

The only thing I will tell a kid is that hair hanging from the helmet is part of the uniform and can be used to make tackles. We had a stud RB who had dreads, he came over to the sideline and told us that the other team was pulling his hair, I told him either cut the hair of quit complaining. Next series he went out and was plowing through the middle on trap someone grabbed his hair and yanked after the play was over the tackler handed him one of his dreads. That had to have hurt, but he never cut his hair

John Wooden was over 60 years old then, retired couple years later.
And the times, they were a 'changin.
That was almost 50 years ago now.
read what I said....dont be so thickheaded...I said it doesnt apply in all circumstances......but there is an element of truth there.....

We follow the school's dress code. My last school had no hair policy, this one does. It gets enforced at the high school so its not a problem for athletics.

Well then, for the thick-headed amongst us heathens - perhaps you could elucidate the circumstances under which such a rule would be apropos in THIS millenium?
maybe after you establish yourself and get the program winning and the kids and parents buy in..you introduce it as optional, and explain your reasons...then gradually make it a rule if your numbers dictate it.....got that your thickness.......................just one example of how you could do it if it is something you believe in....not that difficult of a concept.....try to be a little open minded and not so dismissive.......... quick example on the college level: coach kelly at notre dame has the kids arrange their lockers in a very particular way...the socks, playbook, pads , all have a specific place.....the lockers are checked.... when coach kelly was asked "what does that have to do with football?" coach Kelly: " it is about following the slightest instructions, and getting in the habit of attention to detail. Being disciplined to make sure each thing is done to a high quality. If you do the little things it will be easy to do the bigger things." enough said

So you feel that if you win that justifies having whatever rules you personally want? Ah, the Bud Kilmer school of coaching. As for Kelly and ND - being organized-efficient is different than the topic of this thread (hair). Not to mention those kids are on scholarship at a private university, not volunteers in a public HS. its personal preference....some coaches think it is important others do not....some disagree obviously with you......p.s. I didnt say if you win then you can automatically enforce whatever you want...it helps though but isnt the end all be all.....God gave you one mouth and two ears for a reason...maybe you should read someone else's opinion, take it in and be quite....SOMETIMES....I gather you have a hard time doing that...just a hunch

I wouldn't have this rule in my program. As long as the kids are respectful, hard-working and doing the right things in class, I'm not worried about their hair.

You do understand what a message board is for, don't you?
Also - how does one be "quite" - or, quite what?
Try to come up with better arguments than insults or telling me to shut up. I finished the argument with shut up....that wasnt the argument...it was that some coaches think things like haircuts, personal grooming, shirt and tie on all road trips, etc are important ...others do not......it is subjective....try to see the other coaches' point of view...sometimes listening and not speaking is the best thing for you.....

I don't need someone who insults fellow coaches ("thickheaded" for ex.) or tells them to "shut up" telling me what is the best thing for me, thank you very little.
ok let's move on..I apologize if you were insulted

I played my entire senior year (football and baseball) with a faded mohawk and lines shaved into the left side, sometimes even with a team color dyed in. I feel like a total hypocrite reminding players that our HC is gonna ask em to cut their long hair, lol. But, I just follow orders.

If hair is making it so a helmet cannot fit and protect properly, we may suggest a hair cut. If not, who cares. IF and ONLY IF THIS that is when it could be an issue!

Let me say this..
I don't have a problem with hair, DO what you feel is necessary! Your program for example, I still make my boys take out earrings when they enter the field house. I have watched ears split with helmets. But do you....

He got that kid killed filming a stupid practice. And looked the other way to cover up rape allegations. Really have zero interest at all in hearing what Brian Kelly has to say about doing things the right way. Seriously...eff that guy. He's a deplorable human being. P.O.S.

Used to get cranked about hair, beards etc. My only rule was if you had a beard or mustache it had to look better than mine if I grew one. I have a terrible beard so no problem there.
The other story I have is this. Had a kid once who wore a crew cut and was a yes sir, no sir type kid. Talented, and a good student too. Only problem was he was an Eddie Haskell. You couldnt turn your back on hm. Got kicked off the team as a senior.
Then I had three brothers. Also talented but poor students. Lived with Dad. Dad had really long hair, tattoos, piercings and had a police record. The kids had long hair and I probably called them down twice a week for bad language in practice. But I would go to battle with those kids because they gave you everything they had and were respectful. Lots of teasing and give and take with them. They had trouble with hard ass teachers who thought they were bad guys. I never had trouble with them. Just got after them when they needed it, not about how they looked. Still see them and visit with them.

Hair is so culturally important to so many different groups of people that I would not mess with it. We’re high school coaches, not the Yankees... where I coach and live at I am more worried about my athletes having a meal and clean clothes than whether or not they have a crew cut.

It’s against the law now in NY for just what we are talking. Good luck getting Latino and African American community’s support on this matter. Test scores and life skills matter more than haircuts

Not only can I not think of anything I care less about than my players hair, but I am actually currently growing a mullet as part of an agreement with 5 seniors.
We are all growing mullets together as long as one of those 5 doesnt miss a single workout. If even one misses, they are all gone. This started the Monday before Thanksgiving, and we are still growing.
Interestingly enough, the most successful football program in our state will not hire you if you have facial hair. I think I have been clean shaven once in the past 10 years, so I know I will never be working there.
Also, I think it is ridiculous that any grown man would tell another grown man what he should look like, but if you dont toe their line you cant work there, fair enough.

Twenty years ago, establishing a dress code concerning hair length and facial hair would have been culturally acceptable in most areas of the country. You wouldn't have gotten much of a fight from parents or the administration as having your hair cut above your ears and being clean-shaven was considered the epitome of professionalism and discipline. If you wore your hair long or had a soul-patch goatee, you were probably considered a grungy hippey.
That's not the case these days. Today, long hairstyles aren't considered unprofessional and neither is a well-kept beard or goatee. I live and coach in a conservative area of the country and we'd have a fight on our hands if we established a hair style/facial hair dress code as many of the kids have longer hair and some of our seniors have trimmed goatees and beards. It just isn't worth the battle as getting a hair cut or shaving doesn't necessarily correlate to discipline or professionalism.
Honestly, either way, this isn't a mountain that's worth dying for me. I coached under an HC who demanded that all of the coaches cut their hair above their ears and shave. So, I got a haircut and shaved my goatee but he approached me and told me my hair needed to be cut shorter. I was following the dress code he laid out; no facial hair and my hair was trimmed well above my ears. I told him that I'd gladly cut it shorter but he was paying for the next hair cut as I was following dress code. He became pretty irate over it and all I could think to myself was "Don't you have some other things to worry about?"

Do I think it's a big deal? NO, but Im also not going to tell someone it's a stupid idea. Our baseball team has a rule that hair must be off the eyebrows, ears, and collar during season. The kids actually don't mind it, they know it's little things like this which sets them apart from everyone else. They are one of the top programs in our state as well.
