Question to high school coaches that just went to the AFCA Convention...Do you feel that you got more from this convention then you would have at Glazier or Nike? Do you think you got more then you would by visiting a college?
I know the opportunity to network is greater, but from a clinic perspective does it hold up to the others? Thinking about Nashville in 2020.

It’s a different experience. I’ve been going to clinics and spring ball for 20+ years. There is more content specific stuff at those things. The AFCA convention was a great experience but not your typical clinic. I heard 3-4 really great talks and a few that were ok. You don’t get the variety like you do at Glazier. If you are a college football FAN on top of a HS coach, there are lots of celebrity moments with big time coaches. I’m actually typing this in the SA airport now and I have about 10 head coaches and even more assistants around me waiting for the same connecting flight to Dallas. I will most likely be going again just for the experience. If you have the means I’d recommend doing as much as you can, as I think each has its benefits at different times of your coaching career.

This was my 5th AFCA conference- and the first I have had to leave early(got home last night after 10 hours of plans/trains and ubers). 1. The content of the HS coaches material was good- the speakers were not as lights out as a few in the past but the content was good. There just isn't much geared directly for HS coaches. 2. the drills segments are very good- I wish there was more info on the presentations- so I could plan which ones I watched. 3. The general sessions have gotten progressively more meh...I only saw a few this year. I think it is the 10-15 minutes of commercial presentations. I don't have an answer as to how to address the sponsors but I don't care for the commercials. 4. Networking-Networking-Networking---It doesn't have to mean that you are trying to get a job. I would love to get more chances to speak at clinics so talking to coaches and getting some exposure isn't a bad thing. Plus you may have coaches working for you that you can help move up the ladder if that is what they are after. 5. It isn't here--- Best working vacation ever- my wife has come with on 3 conventions- we can write off hotel and rental car as well as my meals. We have met other great couples and really enjoyed having a kid free retreat.

Yeah... in 1996 I was a 22 year old "pee on" Division II school G.A. (not like I have climbed the ranks I'm just a 2A HS coach in AZ now). I rode in a hotel elevator with Tom Osborne (few other people were in the elevator as well), it was after Nebraska annihilated Florida in the Fiesta Bowl. When I got off the elevator, I congratulated Coach Osborne on winning the National Championship, He responded with "Thank you".

It's a ton of fun. Decent X's and O's but the networking cannot have a value put on it.
