I have just completed my first season in a new school. We had success, won the region for the 1st time in 22 years, hosted a 1st round playoff game in just as many, and made it to the 2nd round for the first time in over a decade.
Some observations I have made after the season: Head Coach is far too hands off, the overall team discipline is doo doo, the ability to handle success from individual and team standpoint is awful, off season training program is developmentally flawed, and kids are not as mentally tough as needed.
SO what are training/practice drills or ideas you have in order to encourage mental toughness?
What are program ideas you have that encourage discipline? How do you encourage a HC to be more hands on in program structure?

You don't encourage the HC. It's his program to run as he sees fit, for better or worse.

foolproof plan, go get all the latest life changing self help books
"purpose driven purpose of life" "how to team the team out of a team" "mission statements for when you need to state your mission" "what is your mission statement for writing mission statements?" "who moved my cheese?"
lay them all around his office....once he reads them he will turn into a bonafide culture changer and you guys will win state for sure

Newhope: The answer to that question is our athletes were better than the opposing teams. This season was an anomaly. We have good kids that work hard, but in order to have long term success within this program small changes or tweak should be made. I should say that the 5 coaches on staff here are all VERY good coaches, between the 5 of us there are 3 state championship winners, 7 total state championship appearances.
So I am trying to learn some ways to help a team handle some success, encourage discipline, and it never hurts to ask for help from others who possibly could have some insight.

Next divide the staff up into groups for "collaboration", jot down some thoughts you have taken from these books on a couple of posted notes, place them on the room wall. And discuss how you all can "align" your thoughts and ideas, to benefit the "stakeholders" involved.

So I am trying to learn some ways to help a team handle some success, encourage discipline, and it never hurts to ask for help from others who possibly could have some insight. when you have your own team, run it however you want, if you have problems with the head coach make them known to him personally, if you don't hear what you want to hear drive on to another school You my friend have hit the proverbial wall....you think you can do the head coaches job better than the head coach, it's time to move on. Or I guess you could run your mouth about him to parents and other coaches trying to build a little coalition of disgruntled people, start having little culture meetings behind his back, Maybe get him fired and see how that works, but that would make you just like every other low down chitbird who ever pulled that move . Probably coming on a little too strong and I apologize, but it's obvious in your post that you feel the head coach is inadequate to move the program forward, you could have asked for help with culture crap without mentioning him at all, but you didn't. If every disgruntled assistant who thought they knew the best way to run a team would just keep their mouths closed or gtfo then this job would be a whole lot easier we have to take crap off of parents, fans, other teachers, admin etc etc etc...but somehow we are worse to each other than all of them combined when our ego's kick in

I would start with an end of year assessment (if not done all ready) in which all coaches identify the good and bad. During this review, you point out these areas of concern along with suggestions for fixing the problem.
I applaud your success and the fact that you recognize that it is only a start. Your head coach may/may not be receptive but use the experiences to continue your own professional growth and development. Just a few of my thoughts.

If you have 5 coaches that good, it's NOT just superior talent. You have talent and good kids that work hard. We all make small tweaks from year to year to make us better. Perhaps you view the head coach as hands off because he has quality assistants and he lets them do their job. There's nothing wrong with trying to learn ways to do all those things and nothing wrong with looking for help or insight. However, it is the head coach who has to ultimately decide what tweaks HE wants to make. If he's not asking for a first year on staff's opinion on these things, I'd tread lightly. Nobody wants the new guy who comes in and thinks he can "fix" everything. I'm not going as far as other posters here, because we don't have enough info about you, the HC, or the situation. However, tread lightly. I would be leery of a guy who was in his first year on my staff thinking we were doing most things wrong and seeking out ways to fix it. I do, however, ask staff on suggestions on how we can improve from year to year. Telling me my discipline was "doo doo", that I was too hands off, that my offseason program was developmentally flawed would not be a good idea.

Continuing, here's what I would want: you see something you think we can do better in the offseason, bring me a suggestion: "hey, coach, what do you think about us doing so and so in the offseason. I think it could help us with whatever".....same thing in other areas. Don't tell me you don't like what I'm doing, give me some ideas on things that make us better.

If the team hasn't had a lot of success, that sounds like part of the growing process to me. The staff has a ton of experience to draw upon. Use those lessons to help teach the kids about what it means to be a winner - on the field, in the classroom, in the community. While you have a lot of success (and congrats to you for a great season), those young men haven't. They need to learn that lesson just like anything else. Guide them through it.
Or, you know, just row the boat! Hahahaha

To keep the thread productive (granted there has been some freakin' comedic gold here) just ask him if you can implement an idea with the kids. I've never had a HC tell me we couldn't try something as long as it isn't drastic or going against the grain of his program vision. If it fits the mission, why not try it?
