All,
Looking for game week insight. Do you have Monday as scout day, or do you jump right into Monday being an offensive or defensive day? I have seen some coaches have Monday as scout day, Tuesday=Offense or Defense, Wednesday=Defense or Offense, Thursday=both. Others I have seen just have Monday=Offense, Tuesday=Defense, Wednesday= Both, Thursday=Both. Looking for what you guys do, and please share why. Thanks!

Get to work on the next opponent IMMEDIATELY on Monday. There is only so much time available (& unpredictable weather conditions can interfere) so don't WASTE IT! Last Friday's game is HISTORY.

We take 10 extra minutes Monday and go over the game plan. Other than that it’s a normal day. It may not be as fast paced as you like Bc you may not get lined up right every time right away. Or they may not remember your checks. But as ace back mentioned. Don’t waste the reps.

Monday is a work day for us. Kids get a preview of next opponent, then lift weights. Once on the field, we have three fundamental periods: special team individual skills, tackling, blocking. We then spend about 20 minute introducing the defensive game plan and 20 minutes introducing the offensive game plan. We then do some kind of conditioning.

Monday Scout O Vs Team D. Goal line Defense. 1:30 possible 1:45.
Tuesday Team O Vs. Scout D. Goal line Offense. 1:30 to possible 1:45.
Wednesday review O and D, then TMO plus "specialties".
Thursday Special Teams. Finish with review of on-field calls and audibles.

Monday - Film review/preview and weights/rehab. Tuesday - Practice Wednesday - Practice Thursday - Practice Friday - Game Weekend - No meetings for anyone
We meet as a staff right after school on Monday while the players are doing a speed/rehab workout. This is our only meeting of the week as a staff and it lasts less than an hour. Then we watch film with the players for corrections and then a little film to prepare them for what they will see during the week.
Tuesday and Wednesday practices are 2:15 and they are more intensive. Our two way players spend individual time on one side on Tuesday and the other on Wednesday. When we are in team periods we split the time on which side of the ball we are emphasizing. Two way guys go to the side of emphasis. So even though a player may have spent indy time on offense he will still get team reps on defense if that is the emphasis at the time.
Thursday is a lot like others' walkthrough days except we go full pads with a thud tempo.
We work KOR on Tuesday, Punt Return on Wednesday, and the rest on Thursday.
Friday we eat as a team, go through a session of Financial Peace University, and then we make our commitments to each other for the game.
Having said all that, we will always look each year to make things better. We do not believe this to be the best way, simply what has worked for us lately. Very little can be proved in football. So we are all just making the best judgement calls we can.

I have to admit, I have never heard of a coach taking his team through financial lessons prior to the game.

Monday for us is a mental day. We let the kids wear just helmets and we walk through our base runs vs upcoming teams defense. We go over blocking rules, adjustments etc. We do the same on defense, go through their top run/pass plays, how we will align and adjust etc. We do this mental walk through day so we can spend the rest of the week repping things over and over and the kids should already have a good idea on what we want to do based on mondays practice

On Saturday mornings we do a lite dynamic stretching session followed by a very lite lifting session and then lite cardio. Total time to do that is about 45 minutes, then we go through previous night's film and upcoming opponent film.
Monday - walk through opponent O/D and then it's indies & team offense Tuesday - offensive indies, team O, defensive indies, team D. (this day is offense focused - 60% of time focused on offense). Wednesday - offensive indies, team O, defensive indies, team D. (this day is defense focused - 60% of time focused on defense). Thursday - walkthrough, D skill guys stay longer to go through coverages
We spend about 15 minutes doing special teams at every practice.

Usually, Monday was a "scout day" in shells with no hitting. We'd watch film (we'd review our own with the kids, then watch some of the opponents to show them what they were up against), then just some Indy and maybe group drills followed by walkthroughs of what we were going to see that week and any new things we were putting in for both sides of the ball and maybe do some STs work. We'd usually have our freshman or JV games on Mon. so a lot of times those kids were dismissed part way through, anyway, leaving a skeleton crew if we wanted a full scout team, anyway. All together we'd spend about 2-2.5 hours at a Monday practice, including 30 minutes or so to review our own film with the players and then watch some opponent film. Tues. and Wednesday were offense and defense, but we did that several different ways. One place would do offensive and defensive emphasis days with maybe 30-40 minutes of the other side. Others would divide it up equally and do about an hour each, give or take. They went for 2.5 hours. Thursday was another walkthrough in shirts to cover special teams and any defensive adjustments kids were struggling with. At different stops this would vary from 30-90 minutes.

I, personally, have always prefered a "cerebral" day on Monday. Film, warm-up/stretch, weights/rehab, light-contact INDY, walk through any offensive adjustments/new formations/motions and defensive formation recognition. This is assuming that we have a group that will get after it on Tuesday and Wednesday without any extraneous "prompting" my the staff.
