What is your program’s standard to earn a varisity letter? I’ve used must make an appearance in half the quarters played. Just curious as to other school’s standard.

Most teams around here will give a letter if a player finishes the season.

That's what we do. If you finish the season you get a letter. We called our JV kids up and they played with us for the playoffs, we will give all those kids a varsity letter as well.

Ordering a jacket with a letter on it. Lettering isn’t what it used to be

We used the rule of made an appearance in 50% of the season’s quarters for varsity. Everyone else got JV letters. I was under the impression that was pretty standard.

Like, if you appeared in half the game of the season.

Like, if you appeared in half the game of the season. If you were on the field and it was a live play it counted as an appearance in a quarter. 40 quarters in a season so you have to appear in 20 quarters. It works out where all your starters and special teams kids letter. If you don’t start, play special teams or in a rotation then you don’t letter.

We finished the year with 24 kids 9-12 on an 2-8 team. They're all gonna letter. They survived. They deserve something. I guess I'm one of those guys who doesn't value the varsity letter as much as some.

We are supposed to track it for kids that play JV so they don’t play more than 6 quarters during a week.

Our kids letter if they finish the season. There is something to be said for being able to make it through a seasons worth of football practices. We have no JV program, so all 10th graders are on the Varsity. Some of those kids simply will not get into games because they are not ready for Varsity action. But they practice every day.

It's self-enforced, which makes it unenforceable. The big thing is that kids can't play two games on the same day.

For us we call up our JV kids once their season is over to basically be practice bodies during the playoffs. It is good experience for them, sure, but it's also a big ask knowing that they are very unlikely to get any playing time.
So we try to treat them really well and if giving them a varsity letter helps keep them happy and helps the next year's group buy into it, then it's a no brainer for us.

Everyone gets something in our program. We fielded JV and Varsity teams this year. If a player was a starter on any unit of varsity consistently throughout the season, they earned a varsity letter. This was somewhat open to interpretation as special teams change a little bit every week for us depending on injury and eligibility or not getting the job done the week before. If not a "consistent" starter, they earned a JV participation certificate.

That was our thinking, guys who might not have been starters but definitely contributed during the season get some love. Those "plug and play" kids get some, as well.

We do have a 6 quarter rule so we have to track how many quarters a player has an appearance. Pretty much if you are a starter on O, D or special teams you will play in enough quarters to earn a letter.
If you do not then you earn a JV bar. We don’t have a freshman team so you end up either varsity or JV. We have about 50 total kids on the roster 9-12.

Our freshmen get numerals (grad year). FS players get a JV letter. I think all of our guys get a varsity letter after their junior season.
For a freshman or sophomore to get a varsity letter, they have to pretty much be a starter.
