One time a coach brought a bottle of Mountain Dew out to practice. I think he even took a drink out of it while his players ran to get water during a break. did he coach in an X-treme way after that? I bet he coached the snowboard team, too.

My first year coaching MS ball a guy on staff literally ate chili cheese nachos during a game. On the sideline, not in the box. Saw a Pizza delivered to the box onceΒ

like drinking a coffee during practice, just not something I think is professional. I could see a visor guy doing something like this....one of those guys that stands on the sidelines most of the practice and is upset that that the HC doesn't listen to any of his ideas...eats his pear and talks way to familiar with the kids...."for sure bro if I was calling the plays we'd be feeding you that rock" but you said long time assistant which means that this is a guy who has been around and knows the deal, maybe he's frustrated with the direction of the program and its a protest pear.....either way this is a big issue that definitely needs to get sorted out...I never seen a guy drink coffee at practice either but that would be weird too....I think if he wears a tank top and does all of this you gotta fire him for cause
This is no ordinary pear, it's a protest pear. Fear the pear!

like drinking a coffee during practice, just not something I think is professional. I ate a bag of chips the other day during stretches. I drank a half gallon of chocolate milk 45 minutes before the game a few weeks ago. I say eat it lol. Unless he tries to talk with his mouthful because thatβs impolite

flexbone takes about 10 minutes to eat , in the middle of practice, could eat on the walk to practice field or drive over but waits till on the field. I like the power of the pear! What does he do with the core when he is done? Does he just chuck it somewhere? Is there a big, rotting pile of pear cores on the practice field?

how about just a straight up dinner, fork, knife the whole deal, cutting meat and coaching em up Napkin tucked in the shirt collar...

Ok, this is has been entertaining but does a hot dog or slice pizza change your opinion on the situation.

Long time assistant gets to practice late most days (because of school times) and when he is on the field coaching eats a pear every day during practice. Would this be ok in your program? I got bigger fish to fry. If he's good who cares is my opinion. Also, frankly, so many kids eat like such crap, I think it might be a good example to them. JMO.

Ok, this is has been entertaining but does a hot dog or slice pizza change your opinion on the situation. Yes. I would view that differently. I don't know why. Maybe there is a calorie threshold?

Maybe there is a calorie threshold? 3 things from this thread. 1) I think at least the pear is showing good healthy eating habits that eating a hot dog doesnβt provide 2) the former head coach at my current school ate fried catfish on the sideline while his team was beating the hell out of another school 3) fshamrock is cracking my sh!t up

Ok, this is has been entertaining but does a hot dog or slice pizza change your opinion on the situation. Only that I imagine it would be harder to do your job with either or those two items. A pear isn't flimsy, greasy, and can easily be put in a jacket pocket. The issue is if the eating gets in the way of coaching, I can see a slice of pizza being more difficult to coach with than a pear

I coached for a guy - he was a single guy in his late 30's - whose mom would bring him a big hoagie and a giant mason jar full of sweet tea everyday during summer practices. He'd sit in the shade with his mom, pounding his sandwich, while the rest of us coached. When he was done he'd rejoin practice still drinking from his mason jar. He was a heck of a coach but everybody thought he was nuts.

I can see why the original poster doesn't like it though, it's not something you can put your finger on but it just seems flippant, like when you have a class rule that you can't flip bottles, so a kid start rolling it around the desk, and when you ask him to stop he says "what? what?...you said we can't flip it didn't say anything about not rolling it"......that kind of thing..I've never met this pear-eater and likely won't but I can tell ya right now I'm not a fan, besides who just eats a pear in the first place? It's not exactly in the upper echelon of hand held fruits, a good granny smith apple or a banana does the job just fine, feels like the pear is just being over the top, like "not only am I going to eat at practice, I'm going to eat this way too juicy fruit where the stem breaks off really easily" Just remember, when you eat a banana, always bring the banana to your mouth, never your mouth to the banana.

Is he possibly diabetic?
Pears are sweet yet wont spike his blood sugar because they're higher in fiber.
I don't know...I just was googling some possible reasons to why it was a pear.

I know of a cross country coach who, while sending his kids off on a run, gave a kid money and told him to stop at 7-11 and get him a chili dog and diet Coke. I guess a pear is better.

As long as the assistant does his job I wouldn't care if he ate a piece of fruit or had a small snack during practice. As long as I knew I was a good assistant and if this irked the HC, I would probably do it on purpose as a joke just to see the HC start twitching or something.
