Hey guys I know a guy who’s a student assistant at his university and wants to coach but he has social anxiety disorder and is shy but he says he’s getting more comfortable. Any advice for him?

It's funny, it's one of those things that I've seen help guys with some issues. I get panic attacks and have generalized anxiety. I find the structure of coaching...the routine, the work, how it defines things and pushes everything else out. That helps me a lot.
I had an assistant who has a form of spastic aphasia that caused him to stutter enormously. When he was coaching, he could just be comfortable and focus on that, and his condition seemed to improve dramatically.
The point being, it may actually be good for him to do something he loves and can lower himself in.

I believe that doing what you love is never "work". I'm betting that if he gets on the field and functions as a coach everything will be all right.

Used to suffer from this years ago. ALWAYS felt comfortable on the field, but hated being in the public eye, public speaking, formal meetings, etc... I did find a pretty awesome life coach that helped me break through a bit. He challenged me to join an organization called "Toastmasters". It is a national organization designed to help build effective leadership and speaking skills. (Some big companies actually have a Toastmaster organization that helps their employees w/ professional development). Really helped me with my anxiety and putting myself "out there". Been a head coach for 12 years now - probably would not have ever even applied until getting the confidence I needed years ago. Only wish I could win a few more games lol - as that creates a whole different type of anxiety. Only cure is to win, a tough thing to do right now.
