For those of you who have the JV practice with the Varsity doing things such as flipping O and D half way through and splitting the staffs how do you guys get this done and make this change as efficient as possible ?

While varsity has offensive Indy, JV has defensive Indy and then switch. When varsity has Team offense, JV has Team defense and then switch.

While varsity has offensive Indy, JV has defensive Indy and then switch. When varsity has Team offense, JV has Team defense and then switch. Yep. When the varsity is doing offense, JV is doing defense and vice versa. The biggest issue you run into is special teams. If you can have different parts of your staff handing different special teams, you can split that up as well as opposite times. We've also tried starting JV 30 minute ahead of the varsity to take care of the special teams issues or needing more coaches to help with scout, etc. It gives you a block of time with your entire staff and the varsity.

We do all special teams together. JV is usually scout for varsity. For us, JV will typically work on special teams on Thursdays while varsity is still inside; JV will go out early and get that done. I don't help coach JV so I don't know if that's enough time or not.

We usually have 18-24 kids on each team per year so we practice together quite often. We do warm ups on opposite ends alone and then go together for special teams. We do indy's together which I like since we can teach the exact same technique to both the JV players AND coaches that we want as they rise up through the program. We then separate for 9-7 and 7-7. We then come together for team splitting it for each so they both get looks, depending on offense or defense day. We don't put the studs in when we run scout for JV for obvious reasons. Then for the most part we go our own ways for conditioning at the end. if it's a hitting day we do that together through stations, we just make sure we're not pairing up Varsity guys vs JV.

We have a really small team (55 kids and 9 coaches in 2nd largest classification). We have our JV start an hour ahead. We go through all their stuff. Varsity comes out and does their pre-practice and warmups (20’) while JV is running Team. Varsity special teams is next so JV kids on special teams get their reps. The rest of JV is cut loose and then we go through varsity Indy, group, team, etc. We start at 2:30 and done by 5:30-5:45 most nights. Several of our JV kids stay for both practices.

We also tended to have smaller teams (55-65 kids), and did all indy together. We also were together for special teams and film and would split toward the end of practice for team periods. What was difficult sometimes was that a lot of our JV was interconnected with the Varsity in a lot of ways. Our 2nd team Quarterback for example was also a starting receiver but played Q on the JV team.

For those of you who have the JV practice with the Varsity doing things such as flipping O and D half way through and splitting the staffs how do you guys get this done and make this change as efficient as possible ? I’ve done it two ways: 1. We split the staff to offensive and defensive coaches and spent half of practice on each side of the ball. Varsity stretched and practiced on one end of the field while JV worked separately on D on the other. We sound horns to change drills, including switching sides. The two teams never actually practice together. In games, we’d rotate the coaching duties so long as we had 2 assistant coaches going with JV on road games to serve as OC and DC with one being the JV HC for that week. At home JV games, the staff would all be on the sidelines together, including our varsity HC. 2. We split the staff, but this time all the players practiced together. Everyone came together for group and Indy periods so we’d have scout teams (we liked to run inside run drill on one end and pass a Kelly/7 on 7 on the other at the same time). The coaches on the opposite side of the ball would coach the scout team up on technique during their reps. When we went to team we’d separate the JV out one or two days a week to do some team time on the opposite end of the field with 4 JV coaches. For games, all coaches were on the sidelines, both home and away.
