We were returning state semi-finalists and had high expectations/were predicted to be good. As coaches we all know predictions aren't worth the ink they're written with...expectations were reserved among the coaches but have a D1 receiver and a returning all state QB, and a couple all conference guys all coming back so still expected to be good.
Our non-conference schedule was a bear. Won the first one in ugly fashion against a playoff team. Lost the next two, both to schools twice our size, and both on failed two point conversions at the end of the game. The first one was in double OT, second one was with about a minute left in the game. The second one was ridiculous - after our failed 2pt attempt they recovered our onside kick but chose not to kneel the clock out, running dives instead. On second down we somehow ripped the ball out and recovered, then crapped our pants trying to get into field goal range with 45 seconds left.
Won our first conference game, putting us at 2-2 against the school I teach at, whose head coach used to coach with us. First play of the game, our power read goes for an 80 yd TD, called back on a hold. Second play of the game, our senior all-state QB separates his shoulder - done for the game. Back up is a headcase and goes like 2-15 for the game, throwing a couple picks and their defense just crowds the box all night so we can't run to save our lives. Lose 33-0 to a team we should've smoked.
We managed to go 3-1 with our backup QB, mostly by way of beating up on teams that we absolutely should've beat. Skated into the playoffs at 5-4 and got paired with the #1 seed in our bracket. We came from behind to beat them last year, ugly game, lots of social media drama all year since then and especially leading up to the game. Lots of ref drama and BS that I won't bore you with but we came from behind again to be down 6 in the fourth quarter. We got three drives to score for the win and couldn't string them together to get within striking distance. We ended up being the only team to play them within 30 points for the whole playoffs until they got beat in the state championship.
It was just an underwhelming season full of under-performance. It felt like the kids just didn't care that we were 2-4 at one point.
On the bright side, we used five different starting lineups on the OL, with five underclassmen seeing serious playing time down the stretch, and 3-4 behemoth freshmen getting better. I'm planning to coach at the school I teach at next year but part of me really wants to stay where I'm at and keep coaching these kids.

We have a team of freshmen who were undefeated 2 straight years in middle school. We haven't scored a point in 2 weeks. I'll see my way out. that's a tough one...."were were good in middle school" has gotten many a man fired, when the townsfolk tell you "this group is the most talented we've ever had" and they bomb as freshman, get outta dodge, but they won't ever believe that they just aren't good, it will be your fault not to mention the middle school coaches will probably be in the stands with the daddies talking about how they had ol' jerry at runninback and linebacker instead of defensive tackle and him was biiiig and ran haaarrd I spent four years in a town where the youth team played Pop Warner, but the two best high school teams in our division (right down the road from us) had youth programs that played AYF. As a result, our youth teams would beat up on a bunch of small towns and co-ops that we didn't play at the HS level, then wonder why we couldn't beat the class of the league when they got to 9th grade. Naturally, the only answer was the coaching.

Definitely coaching if they don't improve. My JV team went 6-3 from our sophomore year and went winless as seniors. Everything that could go wrong did go wrong. Crappy coaching, injuries, etc.

They brought some kids in from a neighboring city across state lines and won "back to Back pee wee championships.... well those kids are playing at another school, some kids have just left as naturally some do, some decide not to play and the reason we don't win is me.... just ask the "coach" that won the back to back titles... oh, they also only played 2 other teams

We send out the DE to snap on punt while we intend to concede a safety. I warn the punter that the snap is going to be iffy. If it’s short or low beware not to take a knee picking it up. If it’s wide or high that’s fine. Just boot it out the back of the end zone. Snap is perfect, punter runs back halfway into the end zone and just kicks the ever-loving crap out of the ball. Out the end zone, over the scoreboard, out of the stadium, over a rock formation, into the woods, gone forever. I think he misunderstood me. Please tell me there is somewhere we can see this. is it on the kids hudl highlight reel or something?

livestream.com/CegepJonquiere/events/3402881/videos/1821255676:45 is the punt At 42:00 our HC has a complete meltdown and charges the field, then you see me running after him in my full winter gear, he spends several minutes berating the officials with some very choice language in front of both teams, gets ejected, and you can watch me push him off the field. He tries to get around me and I make a nice little kickslide to reestablish position. It made for good teaching tape with my OL.

About 15 years ago when I was a young coach wWe had a punter do the same thing but he didn't get into the endzone. He grabbed it on the 5 and punted it to the next town. They got the ball on the pat line. It was horrible and I was a dummy cause I didn't know the rule anyway. 2. Your guys' film is awesomely clear. How do you get it some clean?

By all that is holy I will never understand your kicking rules.
It’s a semi-professional streaming run by the broadcasting program of the home team’s school. Turns out the people behind the camera are the most important part of the picture. The picture is so good you don’t even see the downpour.

Speaking in international football terminology: When the manager steps that far into the pitch there's a case to be made, for the sake of the sports integrity!!

He ran backwards into our own end zone and punted out the back of our own end zone, but it was the kick of a lifetime, it soared into the night sky, over a rock formation, and into the woods.

Gotta give the kid credit....he bombed that thing. Clearing a rock formation is the best part for sure. Reminds me of Uncle Rico...

Let's see.....
My wife went to hospital with a placental abruption first day of practice. We were installing a new offense and I am the HC and OC.....10 day hospital stay.....then bed rest for the entire time til son was born in October....we do well in scrimmages to give false hope....new AD, new teaching position so new challenges.....go 1-9. When O was good, D was bad and when D was good, O sucked type of year....fast forward to the offseason, so far personally 1) Had parents both have life threatening surgeries 2) Have spent some time in hospital with my son 3) Had my wife kick me out the house because I wasn't around enough (this is ongoing). 4) Had one of my better coaches quit to go pursue a playing career which he has no business doing......yeah I need a drink after typing this

You win.
Maybe you ought to take a hiatus from coaching?

I don't understand, why were you so concerned giving instructions to the punter in the first place, you had plenty of room?

Because of the snapper, it was horrible conditions and we were on to our five-hundredth string snapper. We wanted to concede the safety, but a bad snap risked giving up a TD if he tried to pick it up, so the clear instruction would have been “IF the snap is bad THEN just kick it out of the end zone.
