I want to get some thoughts and feedback on your Summer Schedule and any compensation.
I would imagine it would vary greatly from place to place. I have been fortunate enough to have been paid every summer for the past 14 years.(I am at a new school this year) Not that it really matters, but I work a lot in the summer(for Football) and summer pay has allowed me to do that. An extra 2300-3500 goes a long way.
This summer was my biggest time commitment, multiple days with multiple practices, JV and Evening 7v7's.
Im not going to lie, it really grinds my gears. I am just the OC so its not up to me. I did sit down with the HC and voice my concerns about how long we practice, we reduced one day but went right back to the old way the next.
Any thoughts here?

We had 11 days of football this summer, which includes a team camp, 7 on 7 league, and practices. I think I got $100 total which is fine with me. That probably paid for the gas to drive back and forth.

Only pay we got in summer is what I gave coaches for our three-day camp out of registration fees.

We don't get a penny extra. So I guess its just what you are used to. How do you ask guys to work 30-40 hours a week for free? Shouldnt there be some sort of consideration for reducing what they do. I know in West Lake TX, they dont even ask their assistant coaches to come in.

Summer was just factored into the normal coaching stipend most of the places I have been.

I have worked in a place where there was plenty of money in the district athletic budget and we were compensated for our time in the summer. I have also worked in places where we were not compensated for our time as the money in the community was not there. It was fine, as no one on the staff was compensated.
The problem arises when some guys are paid and others are not but asked to come in.

If you're doing 30-40 hours a week in the summer for football well...
Never gotten paid for summer but it's like 9 hours a week for us.

I know in West Lake TX, they dont even ask their assistant coaches to come in. We don't get paid for the summer. Some places around us have 11 month contracts for coordinators and the HC some bigger places give the entire a staff an extra month and the HC a 12 monther. It just varies. We do about 12 hours a week in the summer June and July with a week off in July. I never look at my check as - Teacher pay + football stipend + baseball stipend + summer pay (which is nonexistent). I simply look at it as I'm paid about 54K a year to do the job (all things in included, year round). I don't look at is a fragmented deal where there's a bill paying gig and a side gig. It's all one gig that's just part of it. If we for some reason were to lose consistently we'd be gone and I wouldn't just lose my stipends. I'd be looking to try and replace the whole check. Administration came in last year and gave everyone on the staff 1K more a year and coordinators 1500 more. Small, in the grand scheme means nothing but it's nice to be at a place that makes you feel valued. I was once at a place that paid assistant coaches for like 15 hours a week in the summer at a minimum wage rate. Again small amount but felt good to have a little extra. New super came in in year 2 and turned that place into a hell hole to be at. Mass exodus everywhere. Those who stayed did not become champions.

What people get paid for football over the summer? We put in about 4 days a week from end of May to end of June and then pick up about end of July when school starts.

What the phuk is there to do in the summer for 30 hours?? We didn't do 30...but, we went through every male in the school and evaluated their interest potential, 2hrs a day in the weight room, last 3 games of last year of several opp. We play this year, re evaluated every game last year, like we were playing a game (coaches only), we went to our own clinic of what we do scheme and technique wise, 7 o 7, o line camp, big man camp, big man camp, That's crazy.

I would also love to know how you evaluate interest potential? If you self scout in the off season all you really have left is 7 on 7 and the camps you mentioned. Plus WAY to much time in the weight room

Go to a water park, take a road trip, see a movie at least. That’s a lot of work. I know it’s impossiblr to gauge but how much of a difference does all of that stuff make versus a light load? I understand there’s work to be done but I want to find that perfect line of doing as much as needed to be successful but nothing more.

Might not be able to fit all athletes in the weight room at one time, so a split schedule could be used. Also, I could see a coach using the term "weight room" referring to all S&C activities.

Our jr high weight room was tiny, had 4 racks, 4 trap bars and 8 bars we had 50 kids and we got 3 lift in with all of them in 45 min. I would bet dollars to donuts they are A) doing too much or B) inefficient. If they have less than that then they should spend some of that time they spend scouting opponents and get out there and do some fundraising

Just saying it is possible. It is also possible that it is an overzealous program that isn't efficient.

If that is 1 team even with warm up and everything else involved 2 hrs is too long. With 2 teams it’s still too long in my opinion

I gotta be a d!ck and ask...what was your record after doing all this We made the playoff and I will leave it at that. A lot of it is " this is how its done..." Attitude. Their is a lot of non sense involved. A lot of it is only 15-20 pct staff on a full time basis. That is an ambiguous statement. The playoff qualifications are different in every state. Heck in Indiana everyone makes the playoffs.
