How do people get to be this way? Making a kid they wanted to lose weight eat candy bars while watching his teammates workout.

Serious question.
Aren't FBS scholarships renewable yearly? So, if a player on scholarship isn't getting it done (by whatever that metric is), the scholarship can be taken away? Isn't that how it works? So, why not just cut the kids who aren't performing? Why go through this painful process of beating the crap out of kids in order to make them quit?
I get it that FBS coaches don't want to get the reputation that they will take away a scholarship. But isn't it better to have some people criticize your program for taking away scholarships than it is to engage in conduct that results in kids being emotionally and physically abused? Or even dying?

The grind culture and the last chance U thread The thing is so much of coaching that has been done (and in many ways is expected) is based on scaring kids into an action or an effort. I just brought on this new AC, I know some guys he's worked with before, seen him work with kids in the weight room, solid guy. Get him out on the field and its all about screaming and threatening with punishments if they don't do better (had to rell him in like day 1). But thats a good number of the coaches out there...if you don't do it how I want it I am gonna embarrass and intimidate you. They get to be this way because thats the way it was done before, you know back when 'kids all wanted to play football and society was tough'. Thats what they learned- monkey see monkey do; no thought of figuring out if another way is better. I know that may seem like a big leap, screaming at a kid to making him eat candy, but if you gradually move from point a to point b you get there. |

Or even dying? You are right, but in their mind emotional and physical abuse makes the athletes better (both them, and those around them who are scared into not making similar mistakes). |

In today's day and age you have to be brain damaged to think that anything even remotely abusive won't land youre a$$ in a poke.
How a program thinks it could operate that way is baffling

Cameras are every where, which scares me in many regards, but also can help verify the truth in these types of situations. |

And it is counterproductive also. Just how does that make you a better player, teammate, person?
How does running all those 110's help make you a better football player in June? It will cut into speed, strength, and power gains. There is so much wrong. Even if they were trying to get someone to lose fat/weight, there are far better ways.

I am amazed at how many hate the sport they claim to love..yet stay in for a measely stipen. Interested is to see what comes out of this story as well. I didn't see any post here that indicates that the poster hates football. Which ones looked that way to you? |

Idk if the Maryland thing is that out of the ordinary... The 110's is pretty common in this part of the country(SEC Schools). I saw a big twitter thing the other day where guys were bragging about having their kids running like 50 40's... It's dumb. But I think it's pretty common.

Maryland will hire a new coach, likely a respected name. They’ll use this as a “us against the world” or “we’re squeaky clean now” war cry. It will attract more big name recruits than they normally get. And they’ll be as good as ever three years later.
If you don’t believe me, look at how much Penn State, USC and other major programs have been “effected” by the NCAA slap on the wrist for this sort of thing.

But there won't be any real institutional changes put in place to prevent future abuse. |

Apparently the powers-that-be in College Park thought they could do better than Friedgen (who is an alum no less).
Look where that got them.

I worked with a jack wagon once who wanted to use fear and intimidation in everything he did. He was arrogant and did everything he could to be a bully. The thing is, he treated the best players really well. He didn't bully any of the offensive or defensive linemen. He bullied the 3rd string DB who was 5-5 and 120 pounds soaking wet. He lost all his assistant coaches and ended up getting fired. I don't know if he learned anything from it as I haven't talked to him in years. He was a damn coward.
We hold our guys accountable. We coach them hard. But we don't berate them or harass them. We don't question their manhood. I look back to my first few years in coaching and I thank God I had a head coach who put me in check and taught me to be a builder. The sad part is the worst of our profession is what people see on TV.
