No Idea coach I know this Last few years, program thriving This year....Program nixed, and this is one of many this year I've heard across the country. So I guess well see what happens What school? Some schools may be just too small to support a football program. Delaware County Christian in PA. Whether or not its the size of the school, there have been SEVERAL teams across the country that were established programs like Oxbridge, that had to cancel their seasons... Something is happening

Something is happening I’m not saying that numbers aren’t down in a lot of places, but context is important. The Oxbridge situation reportedly stemmed from the school’s decision to discontinue financial aid packages for many student-athletes.

Absolutley, but then again nothing has been released stating that either, at least nothing that Ive read. The overall context of the thread is the numbers issue and teams cancelling their seasons For whatever reasons, i mentioned Oxbridge because they were a very highly talented program that had a lot of kids on that squad last year, my former team played them at Disney last year This year football is gone with an indefinite return Even if OA was pure coincidence ...its another team down the drain

True but the kids who left Oxbridge likely are still playing Football somewhere (another, less-expensive academy, or heaven forbid a public school).

Numbers are down in my area. The ky powers that be have turned it into a year around sport. I played 15 years of football, including 5 in college. Players spend more time with their high schools now then back in the mid 80s than I did in college. When I played, our first practice was August 1 but now the season begins in April of your 8th grade year (w weights) and stops after your last game played. Unless you play another sport, you get the month of December off, spring break and a two week summer break. It's basically 10 + months. Many kids don't want to spend 10 months on this. In KY, we have spring football (dumb, IMO) and can have helmets on all summer long (another dumb). If you dont participate in spring football, you are considered a bad coach, not utilizing your days of preparation. But let's face it, we are guilty of doing it to keep up with the Jones's. When you do spring FB, many spring sport kids may think they don't have a chance to win a starting job. I think kids still love football, but its way too much time IMO. With basketball and baseball, there are lots of games and fewer practices. They get instant gratification. In football, you have to wait a week. And let's not forget that weights and the off season time is not worth it for many. I agree that football is VERY hyped up. It certainly is here in NKY and Cincinnati. With that said, there are many strong winning programs who are going to have large numbers and draw great crowds. But for every strong program, there is another program with limited numbers and resources and some HC working his tail off to keep it afloat. Concussions have nothing to do with it IMO. When you look at concussions, the NFL and law suits -- I think you have to throw in the fact that those guys play 15-25 years of football. Many of their hits have been from the strongest and powerful athletes in the world. Only 1% of our players probably make it thru college and only a few make it to the NFL. I can't say I recall many players having serious long term trauma from a JV hit they took in 11th grade. Lastly, and most importantly, there are better things to do for most kids like playing video games and smoking pot. With the family dynamics changing for the worse, most kids wonder what they are going to eat, who their father is, how are they going to get to school, etc...... i was lucky to have supportive parents who pushed me to participate and supported my participation. This is certainly the flip side of the coin.. States that are crazy about high school football are great but now football becomes to "specialization enemy". Unfortunately, it's feast or famine; you need to take advantage of "year-round" football in order to compete but it does turn some kids off to the sport. Our state does a good job of promoting multiple-sport athletes by strongly regulating open gyms/fields during other sport seasons. We can't put on shoulder pads or gear until after school gets out, open gyms/fields cannot be considered "mandatory" (i.e. someone takes a picture of you taking role and you're screwed), and you can be reported to the state for running open fields/gyms while other sports are scheduled to practice.

I've noticed that marching bands are also having numbers problems.

I've noticed that marching bands are also having numbers problems. Me too. Two bands that used to have numbers over 100 are now in the 50-60 range in my area.

I'm a former coach. My wife is band teacher at a local school. Most years the fall band has 25-30 kids. Spring ( concert )band has 70 plus. This year the admin puts band vs a senior math class and junior chemistry on the class schedule. Only 13 in fall band, 22 in concert band. Last Friday, first home game, no pep band or halftime. Pretty quiet 15 minutes at halftime......
The football team has 25 out this fall. Biggest school in the league, around 80 some boys in school. Only school in league with soccer and closest road game is two-2.5 hours away. Got to wonder why they have that sport. Btw, more out for soccer than FB.

If it is 80 boys in the school, and 25 of them are out for football, and the band usually has 70ish kids...those arent bad numbers at all.

I have seen this at multiple schools where if kids miss band practice or events after school they get zeros in class. I just don’t see how it flies. I love the band but that’s just not something that should’ve allowed to happen.

Numbers are down all around this area with the exception of a few programs. Two schools in the area won't field varsity teams. Two other teams didn't field varsity teams last year. These aren't "small schools". They are all in the 1000-1500 student range. This is a large metropolitan area. There are probably a lot of factors, but anyone who doesn't think CTE is playing a role or that it isn't a problem isn't paying attention.

It worries me. CTE research is always the go-to reason but I think it's much larger than that. I worry for the video game generation. I don't think "the video game generation" has much to do with it. Although I'm writing this in queue for an online NHL 19 match and about 45 minutes from getting on the bus for our JV game... So maybe I'm bias... Sent from my Pixel 2 XL using proboards
