I hear you, I really do but the last line of your post you said "acknowledge ignorance and rise above it". I think it's important that we shed light on some of these things when we can so that people might be put in a position to acknowledge their own ignorance and maybe be more mindful of their own biases. I'm not a big spike lee fan, but I remember reading something from him about how white people love movies like rocky and hoosiers because they follow the same formula, scrappy white people with a great attitude overcome brash loudmouth black people who are physically superior I remember being like holy crap I freaking LOVE rocky and hoosiers...am I racist? I don't think so...but it's probably important that me and others ask ourselves that question from time to time Upon further review, ,most of "Rocky" is kind of boring. [ How was such a blasphemous comment allowed to go through??? I suggest Huey have fantom’s moderator title erased!!

As long as you allow words to set you off they will have power over you. I'm white, my wife is Mexican, sons are beige, my daughter is Chinese and we're working on adopting a child from Haiti. We have fostered kids of different races over the past few years. When we're out to dinner we look like the United Nations. The ignorant, racist comments we get are astounding. It used to drive my wife & I nuts. We burned a heck of a lot of calories being mad about it. Once we let it go and got over it we were much happier. Now we laugh at their ignorance or ignore them. And I'm sorry, but if people take offense to unintentional slights like the "gutty tough performance" then they are morons. It's easy to be a victim, it's much tougher to acknowledge ignorance and rise above it. That's my $.02. We need a independence day style alien invasion to bring humanity together

We need a independence day style alien invasion to bring humanity together I would say the key word here is seem, and I would argue we seem to have more simply because technology has made people more aware, not because more occur. But what you tapped into is part of what I meant earlier. Without even realizing it a comparison between a "dangerous hated political rival" and a person with a different skill color than rocky has been made. Not by the movie necessarily, but in the mind of the audience.

Not by the movie necessarily, but in the mind of the audience. Rocky wa actually based off of an actual fight. Ali v. Chuck Wepner. Wepner lost the fight just as Rocky did in the first one but gave a courageous effort despite being a HUGE under dog. Sly was at the fight and wrote the movie script that night. My point is perception is everything. The reality is, the movie was based off of actual characters, but the audience may be perceiving something different. I feel social media has made many of us much more informed, but also much more cynical. JMO.

Common racist comments coaches say about opponents of specific races: White team: “They’re not very fast but They’re well coached and disciplined. They don’t make many mistakes. But Those spoiled kids don’t like getting hit. Black team: They have athletes. We’ll have to contain them. But they’re undisciplined and will point fingers and quit when bad things happen. Mexican team: They’ll hit you and their tough. But we should be able to find mismatches and beat them with our speed and size. Asian team. They’re very smart but Asians don’t play football and aren’t athletic. Polynesian team: Ummm. Okay I must admit that I don’t hear very many negative things about Polynesians. I have literally never seen an Asian football team. You must coach in the most diverse yet segregated league on the planet

You must coach in the most diverse yet segregated league on the planet Lol Southern California has quite a few Asian teams I work with a guy who makes these statements all the time. I cringe when I hear it and comment in the office but he does it anyway. I feel like society has blurred the lines of what a generalization and racism is. Racism to me is just hating someone because they are a different race. Generalizations like the ones you used are ignorant but I feel they come from a harmless place and are more of an annoyance(or should be simply an annoyance)

Or maybe they prove one still exits and help perpetuate it. Kind of a chicken/egg thing there I guess. I see it here in South Louisiana often, particularly in comments on crime. There is an observable difference in the langue used when people comment on crimes with or without pictures (or other indicators of race). When some groups have issues, particularly with drugs, they are thugs..others need help because addiction is such a horrible thing. Just one example.

Sometimes it’s not “against” a certain group but a generalization that would be considered “good.”. Either way I think racism is thrown around so much now days that it takes away from what true racism is

I am new to this forum and honestly just came here to find a good pre-game routine/script. I can't find that, but as a black coach in Texas that is well versed in social justice, I was worried this thread would go off the rails, or worse, the "just ignore it" takes from folks that do not recognize their own privilege would prevail. It good to read a thread like this in 2018 and see folks actually willing to be empathetic and learn from others experiences.
