Ya I think many of you are right on many different levels. I will get it figured out one way or another!

My wife's role is to sit far enough away from parents at games that she can't hear what they say.
My first year as HC I replaced a guy who had basically been fired by the parents (petitions in the stands, etc. - it was ugly).
Third game as HC we were getting drubbed by one of the perennial conference powers at home.
My wife is sitting in our stands and hears some yahoo say, "I wonder how long THIS guy's contract is!"
When I saw her after game she was really upset by that.
I told her, "Well honey, you have two choices - sit there and ignore it, or move somewhere else, because there is nothing you could say that would change those people's minds."
From that point on she pretty much stood by the fence around the field at games.

As a single guy, I'd like to pose another question related to this:
Is it unrealistic to ask/expect your wife to be at the games?

My wife comes when it’s nice out or she has someone to go with or has a particular reason to go. When it’s freezing rain there’s a good chance she doesn’t come. She enjoys the games but not enough to justify being miserable. It’s probably unreasonable to ask her to come to every game if she doesn’t enjoy the games.

Unrealistic, yes.
I know of a college coach (you would all recognize his name) whose wife couldn't stand to be at the games so would go home and watch or listen on TV-Radio.
My wife missed four games during my time as HC - one when we were first engaged and she got cold feet (temporarily, fortunately), one on her birthday when we were playing at a school over an hour from where we lived, another the day after giving birth, and the last when she was attending a conference required for her job.
She often had to drive some distance after getting out of work to be at away games.
Bottom line, it's up to her. Can only speak for myself and our situation.

Perhaps I should add this to thread:
Once, after we had been married a couple years, my wife asked if she could accompany me to a NIKE COY Clinic that was being held in one of the swankiest hotels on our side of the state.
As I loved her very much and felt she deserved it for her many sacrifices for my career, I agreed to do so.
We had a great time.
But nine months later we became parents.
Did not take her to any more clinics after that. Couldn't afford it.

My wife’s a doctor and helps us as a trainer on game night.
I’ve only really pissed her off once in a close ball game.
We were winning a game that we had no business winning. It was late in the 4th and our top running back gets a facemask to his elbow scrapping it open a bit and bleeding a little.
My wife started to actually examine him instead of just bandaging him up till I yelled at her to just get him out there and ready to play.

But I bet you slept with one eye open all night. That is if you went home that night. Brave man, brave man.

My wife does all the dishes, cooks all the food, keeps the family calendar, does all the laundry, cares for my 3 year old, checks up on my parents, teaches Sunday school, films all of our games, and makes a team meal every Wednesday during season.
She is hot.
I am fat.
I don’t understand it and I don’t care to

No, she went shopping or sight-seeing while I was in the clinic.
As much as she cared about what I did, she wouldn't have wanted to do that. And I wouldn't have asked her to.

I am really going to miss my wife this next year. She is going to be the cheer coach this next year.
In years past she used to film practices, until my oldest daughter was able to, then she switched over to photography where she comes to practices and games and takes tons of photos(up to 2500 a night) She would weigh our players before and after practice and make them drink water before they could leave based on how much weight they lost.
She would bring Popsicles for the kids on super hot days, has already brought them popsicles for spring ball this year because we had a 90 degree day.
Week end meetings she would bring lunch for my staff. Helped the moms with pregame meals. My shirts for all the coaches wives.
I know I am different from a lot of coaches, but I never understood how coaches could say we're a family, and family comes first but you never saw their family around. I have had several young coaches under me the past 10 years, and encouraged them all to have their family around the program, I don't want them to ever worry or be embarrassed if a kid has to come to practice. I tell them the first day, if you have a little one...throw em on your hip and get to work, we still have a job to do.
Rare that you would come to one of my practices and my wife and kids not be there in some capacity. Oldest daughter films practices used to film games, but started cheering this year(ugh) youngest daughter helps with water during the summer also going to cheer this year(double ugh) Son is 8 helped a little with water, hoping he can be my ball boy this year.

Ironically, even LP is undefeated. I don’t know the older I get I may prefer the extra thirty minutes of sleep after a loss. Thirty minutes?!? Holy *bleep*, I haven't been good for 30 minutes since... ever. I need to go home and apologize to my wife.
Anyway, I don't expect my wife to be at games but she loves to be there. Early in my coaching career she sat with all the parents then she suddenly started sitting with another coach's wife in the top corner of the stands. Being dense, I asked her why. She said, "Because I can only listen to people talk about what a dumb$h!t you are for so long before I have to start kicking asses." My delicate flower, I love her. Definitely outkicked my coverage.

Probably not going to find a lot of agreement from the board on this one. I know. I was joking. The staff I’m on has 2 single coaches. One who is a widower and 1 who is a 24 year old who everyone else lives vicariously through lol
