I had a player say he could not come to practice because his contacts had not come in the mail yet so he can't practice

We're in Southern California in an area that is Dodger crazy. We had 3 starters miss practice because they had tickets to the Dodger game. They each sat a quarter per rule and one them didn't get back in because the guy in front of him was doing great!
I made it very clear to them that Clayton Kershaw isn't relying on him being at the World Series but that each of his teammates and coaches is relying on him to be at practice. One of the dad's complained to the principal saying that I should understand these kinds of once in a lifetime chances. Sad part is that these tickets cost about $750 and the dad has said multiple times that he can't afford the $75 spirit pack.

I've told this story before, but I'll tell it here just to show that I think it's important to note that parenting has drastically changed the number of excuses that are appropriate as reasons to miss a practice, and I totally believe that this has happened in the last 15 years. I wasn't that tough. My mom just gave me no choice in the matter. When I was a senior, we actually had 2-a-days, where we practiced twice a day, six days a week, for two or sometimes three weeks, depending on how August 1 and the start date of school aligned that year. With about three days left in camp my senior, I was in a car accident at about 11 PM. (Just to be clear, not telling this story to sound cool, just wish there were more parents like my mother around today now that I'm coaching). By car accident, I mean that I rolled my truck, and I was ejected through the rolled-up window on driver's side and thrown between two large trees that were in someone's yard and nearly all the way across their 1 acre yard. I was bleeding to an extent most would call profusely. I remember crawling back towards my truck, which had stopped rolling upright on its wheels, thinking that I was hurt and needed to get into that truck and drive myself to get help. By the time I got near the truck, I was shaking pretty badly (from fear mixed with blood loss, I imagine) and the farmer and his daughter came out to check out the commotion. I recognized her because she was just a little older than me in school. I said hello to her by name. She nearly fainted, she told me later, because I was talking almost normally, while on all fours crawling through her lawn, but my entire face was covered in blood so that the words sprayed blood from my mouth, etc. as she figured out who I was. She gave me towels to clean my eyes, etc. and quickly the ambulance came. They worked on the bruises that I had internally while I kept telling them that I felt it was pretty important that they fix my left arm, just above the elbow, because it was, you know, cut to THE BONE!! haha. Anyway, between the local hospital and my transfer 90 minutes away, I received well over 100 stitches and staples all over the place, literally from head to toe. Mix that with the internal bruising they were worried so much about, and i was feeling pretty terrible when I was discharged the following afternoon from that hospital wearing scrubs because they cut my clothes off. I was on just enough of their drugs to be semi comfortable while talking a bit out of nowhere. Before arriving home, my mother made it a point to drive me by the school to make sure that I caught the second 2-a-day practice, walked out to the field, and talked to coaches about what new plays I might need to be learning while I was injured, and what I needed to do to be ready when cleared by doctors. Not saying that I was just that tough. But my mom's thoughts were that I better just say thanks for not being dead, and part of that was to go out and do everything I could almost as a way of saying thanks. 15 years later, I don't know of any parent that would bring their child out to a practice in that condition. Don't doubt that she loved me. But there were very few excuses that she would allow for missing a practice that I had signed on for, and that morning edition of the 2-a-day that I missed was the only one I missed from the 3rd week of my Freshman year until I graduated, for ANY reason. Seems too much like parents these days want to help their kids by telling them that they don't have to do this or that rather than telling them that they should do it because they made a commitment. It's changed that fast, and it definitely IS NOT getting better as we speak. Ain't ever beating that story.

We had a kid who missed practice. When we got back to the field house/locker room there he was sitting in the locker room. We asked why he missed practice and the kid tells us "I was locked in the locker room and couldn't get out". The door has a latch to unlock it from inside where he was sitting throughout practice. We still laugh at this one from time to time. Please tell me he was a reserve scout player and or bag holder. Wow what a winner.

We had a player in 2012 whom I’m pretty sure if we’d been keeping track had half a dozen grandparents die and another half dozen dentist appointments in the span of a month and a half. There was also a couple “church functions” he had to go at 3 in the afternoon during the week but the guy cussed like a sailor. Don’t miss him at all LOL
I’ve had a kid play the “i didn’t know we needed equipment” BS. He was a scout player but he was playing the other team’s feature player who lined up all over the place on offense. It was about week 8 or 9 and he knew he needed to bring it. Then he pulled the same ish when he was supposed to play in a JV game. Maybe I’m a heartless prick but I still hate him to this day for pulling that. I turned down his social media friend request (LOL that showed him) and purposely didn’t acknowledge him when we were at a mutual friend’s wedding. Dude is a firefighter now. I actually hope I see him on the job just so I can say “did you bring your equipment today?” Yes I’m a jerk.

As for the swearing, I consider myself a religious person but I have to admit that my phuking language isn't what it could be.

I had a kid refuse to practice this year because his practice pants were wet from the previous days practice in the rain. Then of course he is confused on why he didn't play that Friday.

I've had more than a few kids over the years miss practice because their grandma or grandpa died for the 3rd or 4th time. I have a kid who killed grandma 3 times. He will be a senior this next year so we will see if she passes 4 times for his 4 years of high school. Same kid said he had to leave practice early for a church event. After practice I went into the coaches office and was amazed to see the middle school coach in there. You see the middle school coach is the preacher at this kids church. LOL

I had a 7th grader miss practice and tell us the next day he had gout. The parent told us he told her that we weren't practicing that day so she picked him up. He did earn a new nickname that stuck all the way through high school.
When I was in school, we had a kid tell the coach that a doctor told him he couldn't practice. When the coach asked the doctors name and asked if he had told the trainer, the kid broke down crying and said "Ok, I was at home eating candy and drinking cokes while I watched tv."
Had a senior on my wrestling team sneak away from a match across town so he could get back to the school earlier to dress as the mascot for the basketball game.
On the other side, I had another senior wrestler have to forfeit the finals of a tournament because it was running late and he had to go meet with one of our state senators about his appointment to the Naval Academy.

I remember him saying I'm sorry over and over for having to leave. I always hated he didn't make it to state during his career.

I had a kid recently who couldn't lift because he hurt his hand and couldn't hold the weights. I asked him what he did, and he said he, 'didn't know, but thinks he might have been clicking the mouse too often in computer class.'
To be fair he was trying, and was wincing in pain every time. I have no doubt that his pain did come from clicking the mouse too much.

We call them ERW's. Eat ride and watch HA! Our HC here calls them sandwiches...the only reason they come is to get a sandwich in pregame meal. I about bought him a subway sandwich artist shirt because he says it so much. One place I was at called them JAGs (Just another guy) One place called them 110s because if you draw a diagonal line between the 1's it makes NO. I like ERWs. Anyone else have funny terms. A guy I coached with hated having players around who would never contribute i.e. reallllly bad players finally our HC said "ok go cut him but you pay for your coaches gear because his fees are going towards your hoodies" so basically you got some players and you got some payers

Now, if the kid is being a tater head, then yeah I get that. Usually the ones that will hang around, take the abuse of being the scout team guys, come to the work out in the off season, and stick around for all 4 years end up being the meat and potatoes of your community.

I love the kids that show up every day to be part of something, especially when they work hard and know they won't play much. I just also think the different names people come up with for the guys are pretty funny.

Had a kid skip practice to try out for the surfing team.
A buddy of mine is a head coach of a team in our league. He told me he had 3 kids blow off practice to be cheerleaders for a powder puff football game.
