One of the first guys I worked for had a system for jersey numbers based on sizes. I can't remember exactly but it went something like
0/1 - medium 2/3 - large 4/5/6 - xl 7/8 - xxl 9 - xxxl and 79 was a xxxxl, also I think 20/21 were small

I try to give out numbers based on players who have worn them before. At a former school we had a 6'1 400 pound nose tackle who was actually pretty athletic. Our HC at the time always regretted not putting him in #1

We once had a kid who hadn't come to practice all fall decide to "rejoin" the team on picture day....we had already issued all the other numbers and all we had left was 44...dude was a runningback...he refused to take the jersey, when we told him we didn't have any others he took it reluctantly and eventually broke down and cried, he had tears in his eyes while taking a knee for his individual picture, it was unbelievable...come on dude it's a freaking number

We actually don't have a #1 jersey in our program. We will have over 100 kids on the team most years so all of our numbers are worn but seniors get first pick at jersey numbers and single digits and teens are very popular but honestly many of our kids just keep the same number they were issued as 10th graders after moving up from the 9th grade team. My OL hardly ever ask about jersey numbers so that's nice for me lol.

I was gonna write this earlier. RBs seem to hate being in the 40s; defensive players don't want to tackle RBs whose number is in the 40s. I may in the future put all my RBs in the 40s just to instill a sense of fear in the opposition.

the two numbers i rarely see anyone wearing are 37 and 47. Arguably our best player of the past 10 years wore 47. His cousin came a few years later so we issued the number to him. He's worn it for 4 years. He players WR and LB for us and is a good one. I like when numbers carrying special meaning for a program. Like our top two for me would be 47 and 29.

We don't use single digits program wide - basic thinking is too much "me" in the single digits, especially No. 1. Of course, that just makes the teen digits more popular for the QBs and WRs!

Outside of a teammate in college, I don't think I've ever seen a kid wear #49.

Anyone do legacy numbers? For a few years our best RB had #30...because whoever wore #30 for us usually kicked some tail.

I always used to give our starting left tackle #75 because it was usually our best guy and I just always think of that number being a stud. I used to give our starting center #53 too because it was my number. I still try to give a special kid that number

Other notes- never met a #1 who wasn't a selfish prick. Never met someone who wanted 69 that I didn't want to punch in the face.

Thankfully no 69, but there is a 1 and he is that kid.

Getting old sneaks up on you. FNL hasn't been on since 2011 so there's a pretty good chance that a lot of HS kids don't know anything about it. Netflix keeps it relevant amongst High school kids. Clear Eyes, Full Hearts, Can't Lose!

I found you can shape "cool numbers". kids use to stay away from the 90's. But I started issuing DL/TE types in the 90's as freshman, some keep them, some change them. But as more talented kids keep those numbers the culture around the program tells the kid 91 is a cool number for stud DE's
