I was breaking down film on a team we played a few weeks ago and they ran 3 plays with twelve guys on the field. Quads right, twins left motion to quads with a QB sweep. It was a highly successful play š I've seen teams run a hail mary play right before the half where they sneak on an extra receiver. I have always wanted to install an extra D-Lineman into our goalline defense to see if anyone noticed. Something easy to cover up like an interior guy

That article is the one that gave me the idea. I don't have the short hairs to actually do it though. Plus there is this obligation to set a good example for the kids and all

A few plays in the coach, who was in the booth, noticed that they'd been playing with 12 men on defense. Since the officials hadn't caught it, the HC decided to keep it up until the officials called it. When it wasn't called, the next series the HC put in a 13th guy, The next series, another. They played most of the first half with 14 defenders.

The day of spread formations it's tough to do that. I think you would need to be playing against a team that runs compressed formations.

It is a good story, though.

I've tried to convince the DC to put in the 13 guy defense. Great for punting too.

we have had to play games on a Thursday because there were not enough refs...we lost a down at the 8 yd line. it was grounding on 2nd down so instead of being 3rd and long (loss of down) we went to 4th down

I have to say that the officiating does seem to be worse this year. I don't think that I've seen a game this year, either coaching or scouting, where there hasn't been at least one completely baffling call or non-call.
The most egregious that I've seen was in a game that I scouted. A kid made a textbook tackle, contact with the shoulder, head on the outside at hip level.
Yesterday I saw a QB being chased in his backfield run for the sideline and just before going out, tossed the ball over his shoulder to the ground out of bounds. It was the definition of grounding. Incomplete.

We called a fake FG in week 2 where the holder gets up and sprints out to hit the wing in the flats. We scored a TD on the play and the referee blew the play dead and said the holder knee was down therefore he couldn't get up and throw a pass. I lost my {censored} and had to be restrained lol.

Did the holder have to leave his knee to field the snap and go back to the knee before getting up and running?

Refs are human, as are we, and they make mistakes, just like we do.
But what kills me are the blatantly obvious calls they miss. My main job is breaking down film, so I'm watching a lot of games every week, breaking down film of our current opponent and future opponents. The sh*t I've seen so far this year is baffling:
* Teams consistently lined up with 5 guys in the backfield and not getting flagged. * Receivers moving forward toward the line of scrimmage arena style and not getting flagged.
But this one that I saw about 15 minutes ago takes the cake. A team drops back to pass and attempts a Post/Wheel. There were actually 2 Wheel routes, one by the slot and the other by the LEFT TACKLE, a rather large kid wearing #77. Not only does he run a Wheel, but the QB actually attempts to throw the ball to him! It ended up in a Pick 6, but there was no flag for an ineligible receiver downfield, and this happened into the boundary in clear view of the side judge.
So officials in our league miss this sh*t, but usually early in the 1st quarter of every game, one team gets hit with a sideline infraction.

Officials are their worst enemy. There are very few good officials. An experienced official is simply one that hasn't read the rules in 12 years. The experienced officials are not helping the younger officials and in fact hinder their progress unless it is a relative; then he is protected from the abuses of the game. Experienced officials vie for the pee wee games in their money grab quest which keeps younger officials from working at that level to get better. Younger officials work middle school games no one wants usually at outrageous distances. Younger officials are told after they sign up, you will not work a game close to home or work. Those games are for the experienced official.
Meanwhile experienced officials ate told get in shape, get your weight down, get in the rule book, watch film, mentor the new guy. They do none of it. They are too busy looking for their next gig or jockeying for a playoff spot. Experienced officials will give the rookie bad advice that may cost the rookie money because the experienced official was once given similar advice.
In Texas, officials cozy up to the HC because the HC inexplicably is given the right to choose the playoff officiating crew.
Officials do not owe the HC an explanation for a call. They can extend the courtesy but have a job to do and part of it does not include explaining a rule to an HC who should know the rules of the game he coaches, nor does it include telling the HC what jersey number held on the last play.
We are all adults and officials are to enforce not legislate the rules in accordance with the spirit imposed by both coaching staffs. He is a paid professional and owes it to the kids and coaches to know the rules, mechanics, and level of the game. Anything less is unacceptable and should be met with corrective measures, not the coddling and tolerance for incompetence. We, coaches, community, kids, administrators, officials, official assignors all have work to do in this area.

One time we used crappy officiating to our advantage. We were playing up a division from where we belonged and knew going in it was going to be ugly. There is a crew in our area that sucks, mainly because they pick something to focus on each game and call. And you never know what it will be. So one time you will get 7 defensive encroachment penalties no matter how far back the guys are or something like that. Anyway the opposing coach was kind of a hot head though a good coach. We intentionally hired this yahoo crew and sure enough he gets tossed about 2nd quarter. We only use them for JV games and they suck at those. Nothing like getting phantom pre-snap penalties with a group of kids you're just trying to get to line up and run a play correctly once in a while.

Sideline warnings are the bane of my existence.
Refs with attitudes are new. We have a hotshot in our area that is pretty disrespectful to coaches. Our staff is always going to be respectful of you, why not return the same? You wonāt be getting cussed or yelled at or even griped at often. Our old HC was probably the most respectful coach in America.

I mean from the moment you meet the guy you get the feeling itās us vs them. Heās on our sideline and of course acting like billy bada$$ with the sideline stuff. We arenāt giving him any problems with it but as coaches you get involved and god forbid move into the white area on the field. So anyway a player breaks one down the opposite sideline. Iām walking toward the end zone inside the dreaded white area and he body checks the $hit out of me from behind, turns around and as heās backpedaling hits me with the flag. It was straight out of the matrix. Anyway my HC had finally had enough and went crazy about it. Cutting the story down I havenāt seen that guy again Iām in a poorer area of my state so I have a bunch of bad ref stories

Are you saying that the collision was not accidental, but that he knowing and purposefully made it a point to make violent contact? If he was just hustling down the sideline watching the play and you got in his way...why wouldn't he through the flag? What am I missing?

Probably not. My point was the rules are there so that he doesn't have to make any effort to NOT run into you aren't they? Obviously the fact that you were in the wrong first doesn't mitigate the fact that he was jerk (according to your side). Just pointing out that if you followed the rules, it probably doesn't happen right?

Two years ago we had to travel to BFE for a playoff game. The officiating crew looked like the waiting area of a Greyhound bus terminal in Dogpatch, Texas. We always try to keep it light with officials before a game, create some goodwill that might help later in the evening. The line judge was a woman that was literally 4'6" with a very pronounced latin american accent. When I introduced myself to her I stuck out my hand and said, "Coach Boneyard, nice to meet you." She responded with, "I've been an official for 3 years, I'm really good at my job." She ended up being absolutely terrible, I mean it's a wonder she was allowed to officiate any games let alone a playoff game.
Last year we requested a measurement for a first down and the crew insisted the entire football had to be past the stick. Our HC lost his mind and got flagged for it.
It's a wonder more coaches don't have drinking problems.
