How do you develop a relationship through a Hudl trade request? I'm confused. Guy that you don't know...wants film...develop a relationship with a phone call and talk about it. Call me old school, but just seeing you send a trade request doesn't make me your buddy.

With just about everyone on Hudl there is no reason not to trade film. We have district rules that tell you when to trade and how many films to trade. We get two games 10 days out, and their most recent game Saturday morning by 9am. We trade wide and tight. At one school I was at we traded every game. Back when I started we had to drive to exchange films, and we typically traded the last two games. If someone didn't trade we found a way to get their film. If someone calls us for film it all goes through the head coach. If we know them we might provide some film, but never of our district opponents with someone outside the district. As far as preparation, I watch everything I can get my hands on. We will break down the most recent three games, but we watch every game we can. If you play a team that ran a trick play in week 2, and you have that film but don't watch it in week 7 or 8, you will not be as prepared as you can. We played a team in the playoffs one year that ran a front in game one that they didn't run the rest of the season. Had I not watched that film we would not have been we well prepared for the front. Obviously we watch schematics, but as jgordon1 and dubber said, we want to know who their cats are. Who are their best players at each level, and who can we take advantage of. I also like to watch as many games as possible to find out who has played. We always identify the injured guys on the sideline. Might be overkill, but I have never heard a coach say, "we were too well prepared."

I'll trade with anyone in our league if I'm getting something in return, but I won't send film of league opponents to out-of-league teams. They can go kick rocks. This year, though, we've set up a league pool in Hudl so these issues don't come up.

The older I get, the less I think film matters. Personnel is the single most important thing. Studs and duds.....game plan that. True. Don't you need some film to determine that? And how they get those studs the ball? Yeah, but I don't need 7 games to get it. Last two and go.

It depends on the behavior of everyone else in the conference. In the past, I have shared the film of every one of our conference games with EVERYONE in the conference because one or two idiots are being idiots with it. One year, we didn't have HUDL so I burned DVD copies and mailed them all out. That sent a message to folks in the conference and we had less animosity about sharing. The folks that were being a--es looked bad so they fell in line.
However, there was another year where a team asked to swap film. We sent them film of a great conference game while they reciprocated with a chitty scrimmage film. I wouldn't share film with them after that and I told them exactly why.

Do the coaches who don't swap, not understand that the other team is going to get film anyways?

dubber I was just thinking that today. I watch less opponent film now than ever. I spend my time preparing a practice, grading practice, getting us better. as Brian Kight says..The solution to everything ..Get Better ps. FYI I still watch everything but I am just not watching over and over again till midnight or even 10 pm for that matter

There is a coach in our conference everyone hates. A few years ago he made the playoffs and the team he played immediately got film unsolicited from 7 of the 9 teams on his schedule. They ended up with over 40 films of his 9 games. The coach at the opposing school said the hardest part was figuring out which film to use and which to delete.

I find myself watching film more for my piece of mind. It is easier for me to accept a player getting beat if I know the other player is just better than him and not because of being out of position due to their play call.

May be a little off topic but I WANT our opponents to have everything. We run so many different formations on a week to week basis that they'll end up practicing stuff we have no intention on running against them. I used to be the opposite of this. Wanted to hide stuff v. weak opponent if next week we had a tough one. Now I'm doing a 180 on this. The more they have to practice for the less they can concentrate on the "bread & butter". JMO.
