It seems like every kid ive got insist on either buying fancy mouth pieces that don't have the strap that connects to the facemask or cutting the strap off of their cheap mouthpiece.
What is going on??? Is it just another way to accessorize? its certainly not more convenient. I must hear "I lost my mouthpiece" a dozen times a practice

It is what it is.
I agree, and hear you out. But unless you as a staff/HC want to die on that hill, then it is going to continue to be a problem. If you really think about it though, I am sure it is the same as on our team. Where it is a small group of kids that need to go through a mouthpiece a week because they lose them.

I tell kids to cut them. No risk of it getting pulled on means no risk of losing teeth if you bite too hard.

Full disclosure: Despite my earlier post regarding our official policy, really I don't care. It's annoying but c'mon, it's not really that high on our list of problems.

If the NFHS woudl just make a rule that the mouthpiece has to be attached to the facemask, that would solve the issue.
But, as it is, the rules actually work to your favor to not attach it. If they see it attached and not in, penalty. No way to know if you have one in or not otherwise, unless you just go up to a kid and check.
Actually surprised that it isn't a rule, due to that safety issue and concussions.

Its a team rule...leave the pigtail on the mouthpiece. Never had a problem.
I can see its on the helmet and the officials can see its on the helmet when the player takes the field.
I have never had a complaint from a parent that their son played in a game without his mouthpiece...and because the coaches failed to insure that his equipment wasn't present, 20 thousand dollars of orthodontics were ruined.

What do you do if the kid has a custom mouthpiece made by his dentist that doesn't have a pigtail?

What do you do if the kid has a custom mouthpiece made by his dentist that doesn't have a pigtail? If they make rule that you have to strap it, someone will come up with a way to make those mouthpieces strap. Either an add on or the dental mouthpieces will come with them already.

But you need the one that makes you look like you're eating people.

The dreaded and highly intimidating "fang" mouthpiece
Its not really a huge deal but its bothersome and I don't get it. The ones I used were the simple ones that you boiled and they were REALLY comfortable. I just don't get it. Its been an issue though. As a staff we have talked about ways to address the issue now and before next season.
I like the $1 idea, that will go into effect next season.

we provide mouth pieces for our team and 75% of our kids seem to use them. A couple have some fancy ones including one that has a hole in the middle so he can drink through it.

We give one out for free. Then it's either a dollar, or PIE after practice for another one.
It's not something we make a big deal.

First one is free, its a dollar after that. No money,no mouthpiece. No mouthpiece, no practice. Out here it illegal to ask a player to pay for a piece of equipment that is required. Usually equipment that is required should be provided by the school/ program. Give them a new one and punish them for being irresponsible.

No way it is illegal if you already gave them one and they lose it.

First one is free. After that it's 1.00 and it must be attached to helmet. They cost us .50 and I'm up front to the players and parents.
