I always aim to work on situations in practice (we practice a Last Play play, taking a Safety, hurry up field goal, etc.), but on O and D it's often nothing more than running Team at a different spot on the field. What are some ways you guys prepare for situations, especially at schools with predominantly two-way players?

We script Team pretty carefully. More specifically, I wanted to know how other coaches teach their players about how field zones affect their approach (i.e. when you're backed up on O, you're going to get a lot of pressure from the defense & your Q can't afford to hold the ball, etc.). Do you just talk about it as you run Team during practice? Are there group periods you do? Do you teach it in a classroom setting?

Obviously the specific situations come from film. Early in the week during install/prep, we just tell them, '3rd and 8+ think check routes to boundary ' As time goes it just becomes, "It's 3rd and 9".... I just sprinkle it in during each period. DL don't need to know 'Check route to the boundary, they need to know 5 step drop.
I don't specifically have a period for these, except for goal line/ short yardage, trick plays/ formations, big tendencies/etc....
I just make part of the teaching progression.

I'm a 'go chop wood' kind of coach. Go do what you do and teach like you teach. Nothing wrong with board work, film, etc.. but my cats have to be doing something to learn.
Monday is a Monday and I'm going to sharpen my axe.

We script and practice situations. Rarely just run plays. Most of your base plays falls in one of the categories.
Base Call ( 1st & 10, 2nd & 7 approx.) 3rd Downs ( 3rd and Ling,Med,Short) Redzone & Fringe Area Goal Line Final 4 Overtime a few more we hit on Thursdays during the Mock Game

Reed, in his book football clock management had a good Thursday script that I used and would add to it, when we did 2 min and 4 min drill I always went through things that could happen

First consider how often the situation will come up under such conditions that make a difference to the outcome of the game. Then consider whether the time preparing for that condition would be better spent getting better at more of the game generally.
It's the same consider'n as whether to install a play that would be advantageous only rarely.

We cover most situations, but 2 minute and goalline are the 2 we cover almost every day.
for 2 min, we just preach on both sides of the ball what our gaosl are... move the chains, get out of bounds OR keep em in front of you, tackel in bounds, etc
Goal line we do at the end, when everyone is tired, and we usually tie conditioning into it. We do a lot of trash talking on goalline, coaches included, bragging rights are a big deal for us! Sometimes one side of the ball has a mentally flat goalline session, and we address it.
