Jim Harbaugh opened his quarterback camp this weekend by telling a story about a World War II movie, and a clip that he compares to football.
The Fighting Sullivans is a true story about five brothers killed aboard the same ship in the Pacific theater. Harbaugh told the campers the story of the family, and he mentioned a clip of the five brothers walking together. That walk is what he wants to see on the field.
“The Fighting Sullivans, they had this fighter’s walk. It resonated with me at that time,” Harbaugh said. “If you’re a quarterback, a football player, a boxer — you watch the boxer walk to the ring, it’s a fighter’s walk. They’re coming in with a purpose. If you’re a quarterback coming to the line of scrimmage, there’s a fighter’s walk to it. Coaching that way, any position you’re playing in football.”
Harbaugh wanted that level of seriousness from the campers.
“Once we get out here on the field, that’s what we want to see,” he said. “We want to see a purpose, a fighter’s walk to what you’re doing. Serious about being good. Serious about taking something in this camp — one thing, two things, three things, four things — that will make you a better player.”
The coach also had a good line about fun. Harbaugh loves to poke fun at himself and always talks about the fun of football, but in a camp setting, that's not what it's about.
“If something seems like fun — it’d be fun to get on my phone right now, crack some jokes, squirt some water on somebody — if it’s fun, avoid it. Avoid it,” he said. “We’re coming out here to get better. Serious about being a better football player, and go back and help your team. …
“Think of yourself as a Fighting Sullivan. Come out here and fight to get better. Remember, from drill to drill, walking to the line of scrimmage, come up with a fighter’s walk. That’s what we’re looking for"
