I haven't allowed any 7 on 7 without helmets in over 10 years. One of our top players broke his jaw. Lesson learned. I have seen one or two teams show up for a 7 on 7 tournament without them. Most people refuse to play them. To each his own, and I respect your opinion, but I can't get behind this mindset. $h!t happens sometimes. If our 7on7 league wants to go helmets this year, fine, I really don't care that much one way or the other. All I know is it has never been an issue the past 10 years we've been doing it. If the first day two guys are over aggressive and collide resulting in a concussion will I stop doing the 7on7 league? No, $h!t happens. But I might say "I told you so..." And to go all out old man on you I'll throw in, "Back in my day we'd play tackle football (not this paddy cake 7on7 crap) every day with no pads on and nobody EVER got hurt. Hell we'd even play on the pond when it froze over. Now THAT was fun!!" I think there are arguments to be made both ways. However, if a player suffers a catastrophic head injury and I'm sitting on the witness stand, I don't want to take the chance on the jury taking "$*it happens" as my defense.

In my state, everyone wears helmets for them. The big tournaments require them. Last summer an out of state team attended a big university tournament but was turned away for not having helmets.

Not sure how it is in the rest of the country but in VA we are allowed to wear helmets during 7v7. Some tournaments wear them some don't...we were at a 7v7 today where the helmets were mandatory but a couple of teams showed up w/o them forcing us to play w/o our helmets for which we have never practiced.. Why would anyone choose not to wear a helmets if they could? We technically have the option to wear them. most tourneys don't require them since we can't really gear up til end of July in our section i personally HATE helmets for 7on7 i think you are asking for way more injuries than if they had helmets Kids play crazy with helmets on because they think they won't get hurt, they become battering rams youre not going to stick your nose in there without a helmet so guys naturally play less physically like 7on7 is intended ive seen way more injuries from helmets in 7on7 than without helmets

helmets, in some situations, helmets and shoulder pads. In Indiana we are allowed competition days, where we will wear both.

We left a 7 on 7 when it was "too hot" for helmets. We won't play without helmets.

I wouldn't run any 7 on 7 without at least helmets. Maybe it's because I've never done it, but I just think missing teeth is a real issue. Also, seems like guys would be so timid without that helmet that they wouldn't really be a useful practice.

The best 7 on 7 we do in the off season is at UW Whitewater, we go uppers. I say this because the most common injury I have seen is 2 kids going up for a ball and coming down on their head or hitting head to head. With uppers and helmets that takes that injury out of play. Then its mostly twisted ankles and such...

Was doing one about 7 years ago and our star receiver goes for the ball on a cross route, gets whacked in the check with a player from the other teams head. Comes up from the collision and his eyeball is hangin out. Broke his orbital check bone. I think it was a six week injury. Don't need any concussions either.

From a CYA (cover your ***) standpoint, I think you're better off wearing them. If I have to answer for a kid getting badly hurt I would rather he'd worn a helmet than not, especially if it's a head injury / concussion.
