Depends on how your program handles it. I was part of a team that made kids stay on campus all day from the end of school 2:20 til the end of the game; that got to be a bit much because the HC would just make up BS to fill the time. Best program I was part of didn't even do a pregame meal on game days, for home games kids just had to be back by 4:15ish. That was the best- I would get a lift in, grade papers, whatever.

the down time after pregame meal till it's time to get dressed....sitting here now waiting for spring scrimmage... Nap on mat in wrestling room till it's time to tape, get dressed,. etc. Alternative = show them the film on "THE NFL'S GREATEST HITS", etc.

It's the worst. It's just hurry up and wait. I have to lock myself in the other coaches office and turn off the lights and attempt to sleep. It's best for me and the other coaches and players for me not to be around anyone haha. I'm not fit to be around from the time we finish eating until we kick off. I'm wound way too tight.

We always play better when we are rushing, scrambling to get ready than when we are ready and sit around with tons of time

Must be nice to get a pregame nap. Our kids would probably burn the place down is they weren't constantly supervised.
There's also 1000 things that need to be finished so I don't really get down time.
I do hate pregame warm-ups. Especially if some players decide to get some fake emotions going. Our guys are super quiet so when they start screaming the moment they walk out of the locker room for pregame and there's an hour before kickoff. So there's no way that's going to last. Then it's this awkward funeral silence the rest of pregame.

I can't ever sleep before a game. Maybe it's the player that's still deep inside of me, but once I finish my pregame meal and I start to see the other team's bus pull in, I'm in the zone. My playlist on my phone goes straight from George Jones to ACDC. I start to get butterflies. I don't want to be anywhere else but the field.
And I can never understand for the life of me how anybody can possibly sleep on a school bus. I hope charter buses are better now that I'm at a Catholic school.

What time is too late for pregame meal? I'm not a teacher, just a walk-on coach. Have to work a regular job. Boss is pretty good about giving me time off for games but would be pushing it to get off too early for meals

"Experts" say you should eat at least three hours prior to competing. Or put another way, shouldn't eat within three hours of game.

Granted they were playing in New Years Day Bowls, but still. James Farrior (Steelers) played for us for 4 years. He was All-Pro, & led the NFL in tackles certain years in his prime. Another HOF LB who was a ferocious HITTER was Willie Lanier (& he brodacasted our games). After the Pre-Game meal (4 hours beforer the game), we always too some time for film: It really fired our players up to see cut-ups of some of Farrior OR Lanier's greatest HITS: See ATTACHED for example (FARRIOR IS #51). Seriously - with all the Blowback from NFL on down to youth leagues and its impact on participation - you're showing film of Helmet to Helmet contact to get them "excited"?
Not to mention the potential for catastrophic injury and finding yourself in a courtroom trying to defend your practices.

Playing Devils's advocate - why do they NEED to be watched from when schools's out until it's time to get ready for the game?

I am pretty routine driven. Assuming it is a home game, tidy up the classroom, head over and watch the middle school practice for a little bit then stop and grab a sub on the way to the high school (travel from middle school). Then get stuff ready. Make sure the balls are inflated correctly, let the managers in to take care of the water. By the time I get everything done it is time to eat and talk to the team. The time passes quickly but never quick enough.

Because if something happens it's on you. I've see fights pre game before.
