Coaches what are some things you enjoy/dislike about spring football?
For me, I personally love the process of position specific technique, combining it into small groups, and then seeing it all tie together. Just something about that makes me all warm and fuzzy inside, I just absolutely love the process
On the other hand, dealing with indirect coaching duties such as fundraising, grades, parents, misbehaviors, equipment....so NOT FUN! But I understand its importance so I focus on getting better in these areas

Dislike: We don't have it in Michigan.
Enjoy: We don't have it in Michigan.

I love going to practice. I love meetings on the weekends. I hate that we can't hit during the spring in NC

LOL. Coach I been doing this 16 years and I love solving problems. I look at a meeting and breakdown of film as a problem solving experience. I really do enjoy it.

We just finished up our Spring here in TN, and this was the first time I was only coaching one position. For spring practice in general I love how much more time I have for Indy period. Spring is the time that allows us to focus on Techniques and fundamentals.

I'm excited to get the kids throwing shortly after. We are lifting weights 3 days a week and been having voluntary 4 man workouts on Sundays. Guys get in and do some basic offensive fundamentals...1st we have a 45 minute segment with 4 skill guys that the HC gets scheduled. We break for about 30 minutes and then have another 45 minute segment with big skill guys / lineman that I get scheduled. I get some exercises as the dive read or pitch read or scraping LB. It is just enough that I enjoy it, the players are getting excited for the summer and next season and most importantly, it doesn't turn into the "grind" that practice sometimes becomes for players and admittedly us coaches.

Like: seeing players harvest the fruits of their labors in the weight room, molding an identity of your position group, noticing your own improvement as a coach
Dislike: coaching 30 kids at a time in indy, playing the who plays what position round-robin/dealing with kids who are delirious about what position they belong at, taking attendance

Like: Getting a jump start on installing our schemes and getting the kids used to the practice format. I also like developing chemistry among the staff early on.
Dislike: Not being able to pad up... Hitting hand shields and dummies gets old. Also, we don't really get enough emphasis on the defensive of the ball because we can't rep tackling.

Like: Getting to see the non strength coaches get surprised once again whenever the kid who couldn't play last year can play this year. They still don't realize that they don't have to play with last year's version.
Dislike: Not seeing my family as much.

Like - being able to film spring ball and reviewing it. Trying to get the crud out before the summer starts.
Dislike - 6:30am start time....YES...doing it before school. I "like" it...but it also makes me tired during school.

I love the fact that spring football gives you a chance to evaluate talent and put your next group together and see how the pieces fit. We also get a jump on install.
I am at a 4A currently, we cannot do "spring football." We can work out during our athletic period, but we can't practice after school and we can't wear pads or hit anything. It is still beneficial as we get a head start. It is all about the process. I love gameday, but I LOVE practice and seeing guys improve, and the process of installing our system.

I like the idea of spring football, but I don't like that it takes time away from other sports and sometimes discourages kids from playing spring sports. If it's October and you're prepping for your first playoff game, wouldn't you get a little annoyed that a few your best 11 are constantly worn out from practicing another sport at 6:30 am?
I'm sure someone's going to have exceptions to this, but I'm just spewing my ignorant opinion coming from a state that has never had spring ball. If you can find a way to make this work, I wouldn't mind spring ball. But I just want to make sure that other sports get to have their season and not build any bad blood.

Around here, if they're involved in an in-season sport they can't come to another sport until that season is over. If a kid is running track or playing baseball they can't go to foosball spring practice.

I enjoy being able to experiment a little bit without any real consequences. I also love that it means I'm done coaching girls soccer for a while lol.
I'm not a big fan of some of the anxiety that comes along with trying to replace starters but on the other hand it is a great feeling when you see a kid who's never started before step up and show you that they're ready to step into that role.

Don't have Spring football so with that in mind
Likes: Seeing kids who didn't want to go out for track get faster and realize now it was the best decision they could've made; watching kids kill it in the weight room
Dislikes: Having to be a constant cheerleader (or nagger depending on your view point) of the weight room for the other half of the team that doesn't show up

I hate that it's all four seasons at some time during the camp, an that it's always cramped because the rules on dates were set by some jerk living in a more temperate clime.
I do enjoy that there are no rookies, the team culture is set. There's no weekly adjustments to be installing, we just run our basic package so there's no install at all. I enjoy that we have no pressure to do anything specific. If we want to run 150 skelly reps of five offensive plays and three coverages we will.
I don't enjoy that at this time of yet, every year, the DC is having his annual crisis; "I think we need to run a 30 next year," "we're going to be a man team." "I want to start blitzing." None of these ever come to pass but we have the same discussion every year.
I enjoy that it's a time where we can let guys sink or swim. That we can give a guy all the first team reps we want and see if he can do it.

I like:
1. The fact that you can concentrate on whatever you want (passing game, defense, offense, fundamentals, etc and maybe not all at the same time). 2. The fact that you can access talent and maybe try a kid in a different position. 3. Get out of the weight room and onto the field for a while. 4. Be patient with younger kids. 5. Acclimate the incoming Freshman to "varsity" style football. 6. Play around with some different schemes.
I dislike: 1. Injuries 2. Getting my staff here (lots of paraprofessionals who can't commit to spring like they can in season) 3. The "pressure" of doing spring football. If I don't have it and my opponents are having it, I am a terrible coach. 4. The fact that kids forget so much that they learned in spring. 5. Player "burn out" come September. There are definitely kids that don't get burnt out BUT how many times do my offensive line have to block hand-shields??? All spring, summer and season long??? How many hitches do my WR's have to run??? 6. Coach "burnout" - years ago, when we didn't do spring football... I used to have that little "Christmas Morning" sensation for the first day of football. Now, it's a job that never ends, for both players and coaches.
Trust me, I love being a HC, but I have seen roster numbers go down in my area at all levels. KY allows us to do way too much with our kids. My area has a great football tradition, but behind closed doors, I know some respectable coaches who would love to see it go away.

Ahhh, but what do you do when the meeting IS the problem. I love problem solving process (although to be fair that takes place long before films for me). But I have been through too many Spring meetings that are basically: lets meet for 90 minutes because football coaches are supposed to meet because more meetings must mean we are working harder. There is a difference between loving the process- enjoying putting forth hard work that leads to a successful outcome- and simply working hard for the sake of working hard so we can brag about how hard we work and enjoy the process. I am not writing this is you, but trust me it is out there.
