It's still a requirement that players wear these correct? It seems like I rarely see them. When buying our most recent game pants, the vendor even asked me why I wanted slots for the pads.

Our kids get girdles that have all the pieces except knee pads built in.

Our girdles have knee pads also. We save money by not buying practice pants, belts, hip, butt, thigh, and knee pads each year. Just have the kids slide on a full length girdle and wear a pair of shorts over it and you're good. The actual cost is very close to what we used to pay for all of that other crap and now there's no time wasted padding up practice pants.

Are the pads in those girdles very thin? Because to me it looks like teams we play are never wearing pads. Maybe I'm still the only guy living in the Stone Age.

The pads are thinner but they are often a hex material and in the case of the hip and tail pads they stay in place, they are more flexible and lighter and seem to work better than old school pads. We use the ones with hip tail and thigh and put knee pads in the pants.

And if you have any sort of fondness for who ever runs the equipment for your team, it makes their life a whole lot easier. No more, someone took my knee bad, or one missing butt pad. The built in girdles are worth it.
I will say, however, the one big down side is if one piece of the girdle fails (i.e. rips) then you are out a complete set of pads. But even if it does end up costing you a tiny bit more due to wear and tear, it is worth having it all together for storage, speed of getting dressed and making sure they are wearing it properly.
And yes, I agree more and more kids are trying to get away with not wearing knee pads. You see it in the NFL and the NCAA where their pants are so small it is like they are wearing Bike shorts which are cut off above the knees.

People still use separate hip, butt, and thigh pads?? Really? We don't have the money to buy a full team's supply of new equipment at once. When money is tight it's hard to justify buying new stuff to replace stuff that still works perfectly well.

At the current school, we didn't have the budget to keep up with buying helmets let alone 20-30 girdles every year.

But the 5 piece girdle have been out for years. It isn't just some new thing. But more importantly, we make our kids buy their girdles. It is similar to underwear. You can buy one and it last a kid for 4 years unless he out grows it or loses it. Have been at rich schools and dirt poor schools. We had kids buy their girdles at both.

We've started with the 5 pocket girdle, with plans on moving to integrated girdles over the next couple of years. It's not perfect but it's better than messing with practice pants. Thinking back we could have gone integrated but spent that money on the volleyball knee pads so we practice in shorts every day.

That's kind of necessary to play football in the day of concussions. Tell that to this school. Budget is $3000. For everything. Reconditioning comes from another life safety fund, but for everything else you get 3k. Want new helmets? Fundraise. Want new jerseys? Fundraise (unless your boys bball- then you get 3 sets of new jerseys in 7 years. Football? 1 set in 7 years). Want a new sled? Fundraise. Want footballs? Fundraise. Want anything? Fundraise. Despite us being the only entity in the ENTIRE school district to turn a profit. One of the multitude of reasons I'm leaving in 23 class periods.

Do they make you guys fundraise when the helmet is expired and can't be reconditioned? Sounds like a good place to leave.

I tried to say they were in really desperate shape a couple years ago and the super didn't seem to want to hear it. They lost a dozen helmets this year and the new HC- one of my assistants- is turning them into lamps to try to offset the cost.
