I was inspired by Coach Randy Jackson's book Culture Defeats Strategy - www.coachbdud.com/2016/12/29/culture-defeats-strategy-book-review/We are doing a week long boot camp for the players this week. JV and varsity alternate between weight room and field On field we haven't done any actual football, it has been all competitive drills a lot of different forms of "relay races" in various ways It has been a blast, the kids are working harder than i have ever seen, we are starting to have some leaders emerge better than any point last season... and they are finally starting to cheer each other on We are by no means perfect, we very much have a team divided but i see it starting to bring everyone together. It is probably the best change we have made... some special moments this week and we are starting to separate the men from the boys... the winners from the excuse makers. Here are some examples of things we have done this week.

I love this and would really like to incorporate more competitions into our summer workouts for the OL and DL.

Love the Tic Tac Toe drill; I tried doing something similar this winter indoors but I had a lineman break an ankle when another kid dove to get his cone down...our kids are dumb lol
Will definitely look to use the farmer carry races though! Good Stuff!

we do a variation of the one on one tugs. we get old car tires and make the whole team compete against each other at the same time who ever gets the most tires across the lines wins, best 3/5. love the tictactoe race, going to steal that one for next year's morning mat drills

this year our competition drills were sumo wrestling used our pass rush rings, use hand shields, push the opponent out of the ring toe wrestling take off your shoes, get back to back, on the whistle you got to get his big toe first human bridge in a 6 point stance, you had to get the team across the field without touching the ground as you went over the 'bridge' tow truck basically tug of war in reverse, put on a speed belt, hitch a rope to another person, tug/crawl toward your finish line
losers rotated to different drill, winner got to keep 'home field' and stay. Our groups where mash up of all types. There were 3 rotations (you had to compete 4 times) The 2 finalists were undefeated, they got to master their drill, it was a huge advantage. They then flipped a coin and the winner got to choose which event was the tie breaker.
