Unfortunately I have to start calling for possible jury duty this weekend. I'll be fine if its a normal case as I have all my sub plans in a row and we are almost done with the school year as is. But this got me wondering about having jury duty in season.
Here in California public school teachers are almost automatically put on juries if their turn comes up (as the state pays 100% of their salary) so maybe the answer to my question is more of a state by state thing; but has anyone been called for jury duty in season? Were you able to postpone under the justification of it being a professional disruption? Just wondering how this has worked for some.

Here, they send a questionnaire to prospective jurors and one of the question is (And this isn't necessarily the exact wording) whether you're in a seasonal occupation. I wrote that I did with an explanation that I was completely available for the rest of the year. I don't know if it had an effect but I never got called in-season. I did get called during the winter and got out both days in time for when we would have had practice. We did have a coach serve on a jury in-season once and it didn't affect him at practice at all.

I was called twice in-season. Contacted court clerk, explained that I was HFC at local HS, would be glad to serve once season was over.
They were very accommodating.
I have gotten four jury summons, have yet to be seated on one.

Happened my 1st year as HC in the fall of 2012. I wrote a letter explaining why it wouldn't work (You had to come in for the jury pool on Fridays) and said I would be happy to serve any other time of year. I was released no problem and haven't been summoned again.

I was called for jury duty. Returned the form saying my occupation, they let me out of that round. Had to serve next time around after my season was over.

I got a summons for jury duty last season too. But I asked for a deferment because of the Football Season. The county accommodated. I ended up serving my jury duty in January after the season.

I think your best bet is to dress up like a viking and demand to judge a trial by combat in the pit of retribution
they'll probably send you home

I got called once, but I had moved out of the county like 3 weeks earlier. I have never gotten called back despite kinda wanting to have gotten called. Thought it would be good for when I teach government.

Well as good as someone can be who wholeheartedly believes we need to abolish the jury selection process as it currently stands. I can deal with a week or so case. Anything longer and I may need to take you up on the viking outfit.

Some of the stupidest people I've ever met have been from jury duty. But then again, jury duty actually once got me l**d, so there's that. And she definitely fell under the aforementioned category.

Just tell them..."Bring that guilty guy in here so we can get this show on the road."
Seemed to work for me.

That would be worth staying for.

I contacted the court clerk and explained I was a head coach. They changed my term of service.

I did this year, they postponed it for the next docket time at the end of November . I'm Just in junior high this year and booth guy on Fridays . So it worked out the season was over for me. And I was a one day case was all. The other times I've been called was spring time. Never got picked.

I'm in CA. I go when called. I was in season this year. Sat...allllll day during jury selection. I was in the 2nd to last group..."you can go home now". The defense team would have probably got rid of me...since I knew the kid from the HS. And he's a huge douchebag. They would have probably heard me say that while trying to figure out if I was a good fit.

I've been called for jury duty twice during the season. The first time it happened my reporting day was the same day we potentially could have had a second-round playoff game. Iowa had a weird playoff schedule at the time where round 1 games were played on a Wednesday and then Round 2 the following Monday. Anyway, even with it being a playoff game, I was not excused for it but alas we lost round 1 anyway.
The second time I got called it was earlier and we were still in the regular season...but I stressed the importance of routine for special education students and how having me out of the classroom for potentially a long period of time at the beginning of the year would be harmful to their academic development. Not necessarily untrue; I just hammed it up hoping for a later jury date and got it.
