I had a kid called for taunting once. I asked the official what our player had said to taunt. The official said "Coach I am not exactly sure." I asked how he could call that without even knowing what the kid said. Then the official told me "I didn't have to know what he said the kid had a mean look, I could tell it was bad."
I kind of just laughed. Sometimes it's too stupid to be mad at.

It was a tight game, and out of halftime, we just scored to take a one score lead, and on the Kickoff, they fumbled and we scooped and scored...We had 6 or 7 guys mob the guy who scooped and scored, they jumped up and down, whooped and hollered, a few of them did a chest bump or two, and they ran off the field, still hollering, pretty exciting and big moment of the game. White hat said they were yelling too loud and threw a flag. Combine that with the hitting the QB too hard, I was not a fan of that crew.

This thread shows the real issue. The politicians and educates have basically given up on standards at most places. We have so many programs in place that it is impossible to fail... unless you try to fail... and unfortunately, some do. What really will scare me, however, is when we start allowing the opposing coach brings over accommodations and modifications on his players. Because Johnny is slower than average in the 40, he starts 10 yards ahead of the LOS. Because our Mike struggles to process, he gets a copy of each play before it is run... That is when it will be time to get out. Not to kick the hornet's nest, but don't we already have people doing that by allowing all these special needs players to "score" touchdowns? Yes. I have a 2 year old with special needs (Down syndrome). I don't ever want anybody letting her get a W if she's competing. We already have her competing some in our special olympics program. If she is ever competing with typical kids then it is because we feel she is good enough to keep up. I don't ever want another kid to not do their personal best for some feelgood story for my daughter. She needs to learn that she though she has special needs that things won't always go her way. Why are we so damn afraid to test kids with adversity?

Kid stops before stepping into the zone to let a few seconds run off the clock. Smart football play right? Apparently that's taunting the other team.

Inspired by my thread about what makes you a rage in our game, and the funny things we see in the classroom thread, what makes you rage in the classroom? I'm an instructional aide in an alternative school, so a lot of the gripes that have been expressed in this thread I see tenfold on a daily basis. Our "school" and I use that term loosely, is a portrait of dysfunction for a multitude of reasons: 1) Spineless administration that enables the kids' bad behavior: a) I was the acting math teacher for the first two months of the school year until they found a suitable replacement. Since it as "my classroom" I drafted the rules for my class, one of which was no eating or drinking. Kid comes in the day after we went over the rules with breakfast from McDonald's because he showed up to school at 10:00. I told him he couldn't eat in my room, he got loud and disrespectful, I sent him out and wrote him up. I get called into the office at the end of the day and am told that the no food and drink rule is unreasonable and I have to change it. b) The same kid from the above comes to school high at least once a week (when he bothers to show up) and when the bus aide filed a report for him reeking of weed, our educational supervisor gets upset that he filed the paperwork. This same kid also sold a bag of weed to another student and not only wasn't suspended, the cops weren't even called (so much for "Drug Free School Zones). c) School rules that change on an hourly, daily, or weekly basis. d) Once last year, the old math teacher I worked with sent two POS' out of the room because they were loud and obnoxious and they wouldn't stop. They go and tell the supervisor and principal that he had called them the N word, and rather than ask him what happened, they accused him of calling them the N word. This in spite of the fact the we have cameras in our classroom and they could have reviewed the film and heard that he never said it. e) I was attacked (bitten on the wrist, actually) by a student this year, and true to form, our supervisor blamed the teacher I worked with rather than the student who bit me. Phuk that! Time to get the resume out unless you are coaching a ball team that is in STATE TITLE contention year in & year out!

Not being catty, but how often does that work? Fair question. Not always, but enough to keep you coming back. We can acknowledge the reasons for behavior. If I understand the reasons for some of the behaviors I might be able to talk with the experts in the building about things that I can do to improve the situation. If I talk to the experts who understand the disorders better, I also know when to call the BS and when to call the student out for using it as a crutch. I don't mind the students who have certain accommodations and I remind the students to advocate for their accommodations. I have seen enough students take advantage of those accommodations and become successful. Some have even gotten through college. However, I don't chase students to go to study skills and do their work. I remind them I am open to their extra time and to take advantage of it. They still have to learn to work. I don't care how long it takes. I want you to leave with the skills. We have the same conversation with the kids who aren't diagnosed but have poverty or home issues. We have to understand the events to form a response. The kids with the biggest issues need us the most. We can't make them all drink, but we can show them the way to the water. I won't pretend like it is easy work. It is hard to overcome some of these issues. I think that some of you are right when you say that kids take advantage of their SPED or socioeconomic baggage, but who is allowing it? I know sometimes we are hamstrung by certain administrators, but we can also get out front of some of it. I work in a tough building. Sometimes it doesn't work out for a kid. In fact a lot of times it doesn't. But a lot of times it does. It just really becomes about providing the opportunity to succeed. We can't make them do anything, but we can offer and have some support when necessary. Building relationships with kids doesn't mean I have to lower my standards and expectations. We can do that with high standards. I always just remember my dad and my HS football coach. Both were tough as chit, but both also loved the heck out of us. I think many of us probably have someone like that. When I talk with the teachers that struggle, they nearly expect perfection from the beginning and always. They sometimes miss all of the growth that takes place. Some of them also get so worked up about the 3 students who are failing or being jack_sses that they miss opportunities with the other students. Its the ...These kids... and These parents... like it is all of them. Maybe the 3 jack_sses are jack_sses and their parents are too, but not all of the kids are that way. We also have to acknowledge that the only behavior that we can really change is our own. So we can try to find solutions or we can try to find a better place to work. I think both can be valid in different situations. We have had those conversations at home. Can we make a positive change here...or should we look for a job where we fit into the culture better? My building also has very supportive and helpful admins too. I could imagine this place being much more difficult if they were not. ...and we can make anything thirsty with a salt block...so be SALTY!

Kids who blame the sub for losing their work. I have a student with a solid F and he and his mom are trying to tell the school he handed a quarter's worth of missing work to a sub I needed last week and that the sub lost it.
Idiot mom believes her slapjack son. Counselor insists I need to follow up with sub. Hasn't happened yet but knowing my admin, they will make us have a parent teacher conference and make me come up with a plan to pass the kid.
Why can't I put my focus and energy into kids who care with parents who aren't complete morons?

I'm still coming up on my student teaching soon, but just from coaching and being on campuses and in classrooms, things that make me rage are:
-Lack of respect for teachers
-Lack of effort in the classroom
-Being ok with failure

Just had another pet peeve of mine pop up yesterday: self-righteous staff members or teachers.
We have a SPED teacher that has literally missed a quarter of the school year, calling in sick. She used up her personal days in the first month and half and then started taking unpaid days.. They administration is trying to get rid of her but she's still around..
"HAVE YOU SEEN HOW _____ IS DRESSED TODAY?!?!" "Nope, I didn't notice." "WELL YOU SHOULD HAVE, SHE'S SHOWING TOO MUCH SKIN!!" "Is she following dress code?" "JUST BARELY!!" "Not much you can do then, huh?" "WELL, SHE WON'T LISTEN TO ME, YOU GO SAY SOMETHING TO HER!" "As a male teacher, I refuse to address female students who are in violation of dress code, much less those that aren't." "IT'S A PART OF YOUR JOB!" "Yeah, so is being here every day but some teachers can't get a grasp on that."
She got the hint and stormed off.

When you announce a test everyday for 5 or more days and still get the "we have a test today?"
I don't know why but that makes me absolutely livid.

This one is petty, but what do you do if kids turn in things the wrong way?
We just did a project where I was very specific about digital submissions and where to do it at. Some didn't follow instructions. While I am glad that they did the work once they're in college (this is a college track class) their professors won't play around with it. If you don't turn it in correctly you don't get the points.

Dont know if this one's been covered yet. But people showing up late for meetings before school. ESPECIALLY when it's the person who called it or admin we are waiting on. Seems to be the IEP variety the most.
I have a class to get ready people!

I may let it slip out at the beginning of the unit when it may be, then when we do the review, I will say we have a test tomorrow but that's it. I already repeat myself enough throughout the day.

Not sure...if it was submitted on time, but in the incorrect format I'd probably point out their error & tell them I'm not grading it until they re-submit it correctly. I'm not that big of an a-hole.

He wanted to be "filled in" on what he missed..

I had a girl show up 15 minutes late this morning with a gigantic muffin and a 24 ounce coffee. I told her to either put it in her locker of the garbage. "I woke up late! I'm starving!" "That's a Lil Suzy problem, not a Mr. Coachcb problem. Garbage or locker, your pick. You've got three minutes to figure it out."
