Our DC left the staff after 1 season like immediately after we lost in the playoffs. He and the HC had philosophical differences to say it politely...Well around late December HC calls me and asks me where was the defensive playbook. I told him I didnt know, and come to find out the DC deleted the playbook off HUDL. It was his 4-2-5 defense and his terminology...but it appears HC was really upset about him deleting the playbook. My question is..was he wrong? When I talked to him he said No way he was leaving his playbook on there for our HC to steal. What are you guys thoughts?

I don't blame him at all to be honest, his stuff, his system, and he's out the door. If the HC had philosophical problems, why in the world would he want his playbook anyway?

Ive done the same thing at my last two schools. It was my intellectual property, not theirs. When I leave I take everything that is mine. I even took the battery out of the just jump mat because I bought the replacement.

Rule to remember: when someone leaves your staff, particularly when not on good terms, end their Hudl privileges immediately

A couple of thoughts:
1. Now you know why corporations have security escort people off of the property when they're leaving the job. The next time somebody leaves, immediately get their keys and delete their HUDL access as well as access to any similar site (Google Docs, etc).
2. Technology is great but always have a backup. A paper copy, a flash drive, whatever, having everything in one place is just a bad idea.

I interviewed for a position last spring and ask the HC to take me off Hudl when the opportunity first presented itself, but said he wasn't worried about it. We have 4 different people that are administrators that control Hudl, me being one of them. I contacted Hudl if there was a way to disable a coach like you can disable a kid, but they said that the only way was to delete them completely from the account.

Like others have said, I view the playbook as his property. If it was your head coach's defense and terminology, that would be a different story. That doesn't sound like the case. It sounds like it was your DC's playbook and he didn't want you guys using it once he left, which is totally understandable and fair.

I don't blame him either.
Why does the HC care? Want you to use his stuff? That's pretty bush league.

Sounds like the HC is more upset with the individual then the actual playbook. Atleast I hope so. I think he is too close to the situation, and realistically I do now know why you would want to use someone else's playbook.

I will take everything with me when I leave.
Printouts and what not I'm not worried about. I'm not going to go crazy trying to get back everything I've ever printed off.
The position coaches know my system for their group. If they all got together they could probably figure it all out anyways.

Sounds fair to me.
Why would the HC want his stuff if they had philosophical differences anyway?
Definitely a lesson learned for that coach though

On a side note, none of the other coaches had a copy of the stuff? Nobody had hard copies or asked to have a ppt copy to take?
I'd hope that one of the defensive assistants who remained would have known it well enough that they could just rewrite it.

Not to get off base but....would you guys that said you'd take your stuff with you leave it if you were leaving on good terms?
I currently have two coaches from my former gig that are both using my stuff. One at the same place and another at his new job across the state.

If I left on good terms, I might leave stuff; but I would be sure to have my name on it somewhere. I've been involved in a number of situations where people try pass off my stuff as theirs.

I currently have two coaches from my former gig that are both using my stuff. One at the same place and another at his new job across the state. I was teaching at a place and left initially on relatively good terms. A lot of the other teacher's there and admin were using my teaching stuff (lots of lessons and units I had designed). Few months later some of the admin turned their back on me in a time of need. I regret doing it now, because I hope to be better than such pettiness, but I gave copies of my stuff to the individual teachers who I knew and then had a buddy of mine take my stuff off of the campus hard drive. If I could do it again I wouldn't have been so vindictive, in the end its about the kids and whats best for them.

I would say the Head Coach is a joke....MHO How are you running a program and don't understand the Offensive and Defensive schemes? Who gives a crap if he deleted it from HUDL? You should be able to recreate it blindfolded! P.S. When you have a playbook, share it with all of your coaches. Once it's shared, it's there to stay.

Once I left a school I was the varsity OC at and got locked out of Hudl within the hour. I was livid, but I learned from it.
I will never again resign before having all of my stuff downloaded/deleted.
DC is in the right, HC in the wrong here IMO.

I am the OC and we hold Defensive meetings separate. The HC, myself and former DC were the only admins on HUDL.
