Today I was just notified that the football team will be kicked out of the weight room on Monday and Thursday because the track program has asked for exclusive rights. Currently we work out after school Monday-Thursday. Tuesdays for us have been limited lifts because we have district staff meetings 3/4 of the month. Has anyone ever had anything like this come down from their athletic admin?
We can not workout before school because the weight room is open to the public.

In-Season sports should have priority.
However - could you propose to your AD that Track uses weight room after they practice (since their kids are going to be there anyway) so you can be in there immediately after school - win-win?

This is how we do it. Track goes through their practice while the football team is lifting. Football is out of there long before track comes in. Works well and no issues. I'd say this is the way to go. I would doubt it is in their best interest to go through a lifting session before their running workout?

Make your football kids be on the track team, problem solved! Throwers get more explosive, sprinters get faster, distance...well they are just special people.

We used to have it this way, but have since opened it up to everybody (after getting more racks). Didn't make sense for our 25ish member track team to have the room to themselves for an hour.
How many extra football players do you have? How many are out for track? Is there not enough room for everybody?
We have 10 racks and get around 50-60 boys and girls every morning at 6:30.
There are definitely ways to compromise I would think, but I must say, I'm pretty lucky in that all of our coaches do a good job of working things out where I'm at.

F**K TRACK!! hahaha....kinda
We paid for the equipment, as well as the upkeep. We allow other teams to use it, we make appropriate adjustments to our own schedule to accomodate teams...but it's our room.
We have a machine room on campus anyone can use any time, but the squat racks, platforms, and dumbbells are ours. And really, as I mentioned in another thread, no coaches at our school REALLY wants to lift anyways.

I am not sure how he thinks this will solve getting more kids out.

I would definitely do that but they have no system no structure. Kids do nothing for power and explosion. His solution to getting faster at the 100 is to "run 4x400's with no breaks at 100%"

Then they do FB lifts with the DB coach after track workout. Kids can only get faster by running fast. My issue, and anger towards track, is because our track program then tries to steer our kids away from football. Also, they fired me as throwing coach, but still want all of the OL to go out and throw unsupervised. It's personal, it's petty, but it's also very justified.

If all of our kids would run the 100 I would be fine. But he either lies to kids or doesn't know better and has a 5'11 150 pound kid and tells him he is going to get so much better by running the mile. I am not against the sport, just how it is being "ran"

I'm more of a football and wrestling guy, but I am definitely flirting with the possibility of being a head football coach and head track coach in the future. That or the head track coach is going to be one of my football coaches. Obviously this is speaking ideally.

Whenever the track team is "lifting", it is a f*cking joke. Basically 40 minutes of unsupervised grabass.

I tried to avoid the other track thread, but in my experience, unless you have a really good track coach there is no relation to track and football success. Every year you'll have at least 2-3 of the top 10 track teams in Illinois whose football teams go 0-9 to 2-7. About the same number of the top 10 are good at football.
One of the best teams consistently over the past 15 years in Illinois didn't even have a track team until about 6 years ago. And I'm not sure any football kids do it even now.

I was in a program in NYC where the AD and the PE dept. chair wouldn't let us lift so they could work out. They lifted Mondays and Wednesdays before school, and kicked us out. We bought portable racks, some rubber weights, and lifted in the hallway. Then we moved into the old auto shop. They were doing it to be douche bags. Talk to the track coach and work out some sort of compromise. There is very little that is worse than adults letting their petty disputes lead to decisions that don't put kids and programs first.
Being great in track does not help our football program, but our football players running track helps both programs. Our skill players run track. It helps our football program as they are competing in the spring. We still lift. They do every workout. At 4:45 we have track practice until 6pm. The track team benefits from having more kids to fill events. The last school I was at went to the Region Championship in football this year. Every single boy ran track. We didn't win any track meets. But our kids benefited from running track. They got faster. They were competing.
I have not been at a program yet where our kids did not benefit from running track. That has been my experience. You can be great without track, but we think players benefit from track and that helps us be a little bit better. And in our division and region, we have to be as good as we can be.

But I get where y'all are coming from. We are lucky enough to have a small enough school where we can get most of our kids all in the weight room...and I mean every single kid in the school lol. But the thing that sucks about it is that some of the track kids (That play football) come up to me at practice and say "We're exhausted...we did a leg workout today"...Like what knucklehead knows they have practice that night and is making them do legs during the day...like what?!? But again, I'm just the Special teams guy lol.

Why I feel you need to get the weights / PE teacher on track staff or have football coaches on that staff. You can structure it then to help football and track kids. Work with Track coach and hey maybe more "track" kids will come out for football as long as y'all treat the kids right and don't berate them or have syrup bottles on hand...

I have seen this in poor track programs or programs that are solely focused on distanc runners. Out in Ohio, Wisconsin, and Arizona I would say there are teams that use track to build up their football teams. I remember Jeff Scurran's Santa Rita teams had tons of football players run track and they had OL run as sprinter and not just be allowed to throw. other good football programs like Safford, Snowflake, etc at the middle to small school level have benefited for track.

With that said, saying you see no correlation is kind of perplexing to me. 6 of the 10 teams you listed have a winning record in FB and that's only one classification. PS - Full disclosure, I am not a track coach.

It's not really about "track & football success." These are 2 team sports with too many moving parts to make a side-by-side comparison. Kids get faster by running fast. We want our fast kids to get faster, so we send them to track. Our track coaching is terrible, but the team has moderate success...mostly because of the fact that the 15 fastest kids and biggest jumpers on the track team were sent over from football. We are a better football team, not because our track team is good, but because the fastest kids on our team all get faster each spring.

So, speaking of track... here's a video from a few years ago from a local track meet. This is just fantastic to watch, seeing all of the talent on one track, from the same city, at the same time. Watch the team in all black
1st leg is a kid currently at WKU, cant remember his name. #2, green socks, is Shaquill Griffin, who just ran a 4.49 at the combine. 3rd is his twin, Shaquem, also from UCF. 4th is Rodney Adams, USF, 3rd fastest WR at the combine last week.
The kid in the white/blue and the headband is Trayvon Bromell, got 8th in the 100 in the Rio Olympics.
We're in the Green. It's also one of my kids screaming in the video. Enjoy!!

Here's another one....equally entertaining. I believe the kid in blue crossing the finish line is George Campbell (FSU) and the #2 leg in Blue is Artavis Scott (Clemson). But again, I just like watching Bromell's closing speed...
