Our district is going through a budget crunch. One suggestion that was brought up was pay to play. I heard a very successful coach who had great numbers in his program say that you should remove everything that hinders a kid from playing ... like camp fees and money.
I was wondering if your school has pay to play, and your thoughts on the subject.

Obviously we'd like to provide the least restrictive access to football, and having to pay to be part of the program could be restrictive. That being written, I have yet to be part of a program that didnt require at least some form of player payment; usually fees from the athletic department but sometimes camp fees and the required purchase of a spirit pack. These usually total anywhere from $150-$500 annually, although I know that most every school offers scholarships and financial assistance for those who need it.
I have always felt it best to go the least expensive feasible route when deciding on how much to ask players to pay, even if that means getting a few less fancy things. Heck, as a father of two kids in little league I can attest to the rising costs when we have to pay because the team votes to get their names on their jerseys, hats, and a real fancy team banner.

it is illegal in CA ed code to charge a kid to play and punish them for not paying
my alma mater (shortly after graduating) was in the first district in our area to institute a "pay to play" type of policy first it was labeled to "sports fee" then they realized they cant do that
then they labeled it a "transportation fee" then they realized they cant do that
they finally called it a "transportation donation" they had us tracking kids and who paid/didnt pay
the super met with all of us coaches and hinted to not give playing time to the kids who didnt pay, since we couldnt just kick them off we pretty much all gave him the finger and moved on...
At my current school we have a "transportation donation" Found out 2 years ago it is technically illegal for us to keep record of who has and has not paid we are just to encourage our kids to donate the money... a few do, most dont... the majority of our school is on free/reduced lunch in one of the poorest areas in Northern CA
The best we had going was a few years ago before our CA drought, i would do 3 car washes a summer (one for each level) and the kids used the money from the tickets they sold individually for their "transportation donation" We averaged between 2500-3000 brought in per car wash
A few kids would pay the entire 150 goal, but everybody was at least chipping something in AD loved us because we were bringing in BY FAR the most money of any sport
Droughts killed that the last 2 years but we are currently experiencing the wettest winter of my life here in NorCal and literally have too much water at the moment so I am hoping the water ration thing gets lifted do we can do our car washes again
We actually found out, that technically if a kid says he cant afford a spirit pack (or PE clothes) that we HAVE to give it to them.. this isnt something we publicize otherwise no one would ever buy a spirit pack again They claim no money but their parents drive nicer cars than i do and they come to school with new jordans everyday

We have a sports fee for everything. I think it's like $10 a kid.

Can't pay for {censored}...but can pay for the new Jordan's.
I'm definitely for free, public education...but that isn't the reality anymore. But again...like Dud said...you can't make people in CA pay. AND!!! you have to provide them the same equipment, etc.
I'm just waiting for the "smart" parent to say..."F this. I'm not paying jack." Because I'd be like..."I understand. And you're right". But now we don't have a team.
Sad state of affairs.

It depends on the district around here. Some do not have the money to pay for sports so the fees are pretty steep ($100 dollars per year..) while others charge nothing. There are scholarship programs available for those kids who can't afford the fees which is nice.

Our district has a $200 fee for any activity that has a contracted/paid coach/advisor. The $200 allows participation in any/all activities for the year. A family with multiple students pays no more than $400. If kid gets hurt early in season or quits early in season (I don't know exactly when), the parents will get their $$$ back (but not until the end of the fiscal school year. Any family who is on the reduced lunch program has the fee waived. This fee has not affected the number of kids involved in any of our sports teams or activities.
