Coaches - Need your feedback on this one;
Due to a scheduling quirk with our conference we can either take our bye next season during week 1 or week 10.
We play a preseason week 0 game, then Weeks 2 thru 9 are conference play. Our week 2 and 3 opponents are teams we can soundly beat however our week 4 opponent is a tough wing-t team.
My defensive coordinator would like us to play a week 1 non-conference opponent for evaluation purposes; maybe schedule another wing-t or run based team.
My offensive coordinator would like us to take the week off and work on what we do, almost an extended training camp.
I'm on the fence, I see the pros and cons of both. What would you guys do in this situation?

No way would I take a week 1 bye unless I absolutely had to. Guys need to be out there playing at that point for sure. You get done with all your summer stuff, pre-season camp, a scrimmage, a game then boom no game. At that point in the season a bye week would be more harmful than helpful if you ask me. You need game reps at that point to get use to everything again especially early in a season.

End of the season for sure. Teams make their most improvements between weeks 1 and 2. You'll be behind the ball if you don't. Week 10 date will allow you get a little healthy if you make it to the postseason.

No doubt...take the Week 10 bye, and definitely play a wing-t team week 1!!
You either get a week to prep for playoffs, or you get to end a gloomy season early!

I loved week 10 off ... Helped heal all the little nicks from the grind of a long season right before playoffs

We still have a week 11 game, I just fear that if at that point we are out of playoff contention we would lose the kids mentally before that game, which is a rivalry game. I'll be honest, I hate both weeks as a bye, last year we had a week 5 bye; right smack dab in the middle of conference play and it was great, but I am leaning towards taking week 10 off. Does anyone see any merit in essentially extending training camp by a week? A huge fundamentals week right before we hit conference play.

Week 10. Not even close.
I actually want a week 10 off week every single season. Rest and prepare for the playoffs. Or the season ends early and your bball kids can start bball practice early and the rest can be done with the losing season.
Win - Win.

I would say take the bye week 10 simply just because it'll probably be impossible to get a week 10 non conference/league if your region is anything like ours.

What would you guys do in this situation? A couple of things in favor of a Week 10 bye: 1. If you make the playoffs you can relax a little and the scramble to prep for a playoff opponent isn't as much of a rat race. 2. Most teams are a little banged up. Getting a chance to heal a bit before the playoffs helps. 3. If you don't make the playoffs, the sooner a bad season is over the better. 4. If for some reason you have to postpone a game you have a place to reschedule it to.

The games are the reward for kids burning their summer, don't take one away from them right out of the gate. Give them a rest at season end when you're heading into playoffs. And if you're not going into playoffs, then don't worry about kids losing their heads on the bye week, the result isn't really critical anyway.

As others have said, if you're having a bad season, its good to end the misery early!

If possible Week 1 bye then schedule a game there. If you are going to use it as a Bye week, then use it week 10.
Only had one impromptu Bye in high school football (shooting at a school cancelled the game), and was not a big fan of it. Would much rather be preparing and playing a game.

Gotta play week 1 if you can. I'd bust the OC's balls and tell him to grow a pair. If he needs another week of practice then he doesn't have much confidence or doesn't like competition.
