We've all heard the "I was too young when I took the job and it was a mistake, hated it, wasn't ready, etc." I get that that is probably most cases; however, are there any positive stories from situations like that??
I coached with a fella a couple years ago... Right out of college he took a head coaching gig in a SMALL farm town in Western Nebraska. 8 man football with 14 players all good ol boys. He was 21 years old. He talked the town banker into helping him coach... His first year they went something like 12-1 and won the state title! Towns first.. Seems crazy to me! He's now coached for 25+ years at multiple levels and never reached the state title again.. Crazy history on him.

It all depends on many things, I got a hfc job right out of college. Small town out in the mountains of Idaho. I was not ready but I needed the job, there was no going back and living with the parents after school, so I looked all over the US. I loved my players, good kids, we did well but if I had more experience back then could have done better. I didn't like the adm, I didn't know anyone, not close to anywhere to meet anyone, some of the students that were not athletes were male genitalia. Overall I chalked it up to experience, not the worst place I've been, not the best. The main thing is when I think back to those days I wish I had did some things different in that first football season and we would have made the playoffs. Inexperience, but you got to learn somewhere.

I remind myself and other guys that HOF coaches in most sports average six to seven wins out of every ten games over the space of their career. You're doing extremely well for yourself as a coach if you can finish up with a .500+ record most seasons.
Too many coaches focus on establishing a "dynasty": a successful coaching career for them means winning state titles consistently. They fail to realize that a lot of things need to fall into place in order for a team to do that.

I read a stat that over 2/3 of coaches from all sports finish the "careers" with a record of under .500.
That takes into consideration all coaches from one year wonders that get fired right away to retired HOF coaches in all high school sports, not just football. Cannot remember source of stat but will try and find it.

A good friend of mine is in the middle of a bad boy's basketball season and he is just going insane. He and the staff are doing everything they can to get the kids prepared for games but he has a team full of head-cases. He is solely focused on winning games and just isn't enjoying coaching. The boys are performing better than anyone expected and are playing hard. I don't understand it as he has been coaching for a long time and has never had many great teams.

I played 6 man ball at an extremely small school (like 50 kids in the entire high school small) in high school and after graduating decided to stay involved with the team. Spent a year as the OC last year at 21. After the season our HC left and I was offered the gig. Despite my reservations I took the job. A former team mate and lifelong friend agreed to help me out but he was out of state until mid summer. The first week of spring I got into contact with another guy our age who also wanted to break into coaching. So here we are, trying to take over a program that had 9 on the roster, only one senior, and only 2 guys who had played organized, full contact football at 22, 23, and 23 and a year of offensive coordinating as our entire staffs experience. Fortunately as we started fall camp added a few players, non with experience, but lots of potential. We started slow, winning ugly against a team we should've handled then getting run off our own field in week 2. From there things really came together and started to click. We never lost again. We lost our senior qb in the last regular season games and went through the playoffs with a little bit of wildcat O and a very vanilla offense with our backup qb. We ended up winning state and return 13 of our 16 players from last year. I was extremely fortunate to have great coaches with me and we all learned so much. I'm sure hoping I can do this for another 25 years! |

I have enjoyed successful runs for a long time. The last few years have been extremely rough...physically...mentally, etc. I'm still having fun...especially since my own kids are going through he program now.
On a note about that basketball team. My son is a junior on the varsity team at our place. He's a good player. He'll have a nice HS career. It'll be fun for him. His team this year is completely outgunned. I mean...everywhere. Only 8 players on the varsity team (various reasons for this). And limited height. 6'5" kid got hurt...he was the tallest on the team. Team has played well considering...and are in games for the fight of it...which is admirable.
Side note - My son draws a difficult assignment tomorrow. He's 5'11"...maybe 6'0" with the right shoes. He gets to "defend" 6'11" Jordan Brown. A junior and the #4 ranked player in the USA in his class.
I looked at him yesterday when he told me...I'm like..."while he's dunking over you...get his autograph". LOL

The Head coach that I work for is 26 now and got the head job at 24. He has had the best two years in school history in his first two as head coach. First two playoff births ever.
