Jadeveon Clowney received a lot of advice to sit out his Junior season at South Carolina to avoid getting injured-ruining his top draft pick status and potentially losing millions of dollars, especially in light of what happened to Marcus Lattimore. He played as a Junior, and there was a lot of criticism of his effort, that he was "saving" himself for the NFL. Should he have sat the season out? How is Clooney doing at the pros coach? I don't watch pro ball till late in the playoffs. Reminds me of Drunk Rick Sutcliifle:

Bengals ownership holding out AJ Green tonight. Hes been cleared, he says he's ready to go and they won't let him play.
Sadly, some of these nfl owners would be totally fine with these college players sitting out entire years as they "prepare for the draft".

What problem is it of theirs if some kid sits out a whole year?

Sadly, some of these nfl owners would be totally fine with these college players sitting out entire years as they "prepare for the draft". I don't know if that is necessarily the case given how hard the NFL fights to maintain the legality of the "3 years from graduating HS class" requirement. I think they enjoy the benefit of the free publicity and branding a great deal, and while it might not affect the FIRST player who sat out a jr year to save themselves for the NFL, after a while I think you would definitely see an impact on the popularity and branding of players choosing to take that route. The AJ Green thing is a bit different than the college players, as he is being sat by the club, presumably for the well being of the club's future. McCaffrey and Fournette are choosing to sit out for their own well being, and not so much the well being of the Stanford or LSU. That said, I don't fault any party in any of the cases here, but if I were the NFL group, I would be a bit wary of doing anything to signal that regular season games are less important given the plunging TV ratings this season.

What problem is it of theirs if some kid sits out a whole year? Isn't that the whole point of this thread? The ethics of sitting out games and if the players who do, have character issues that some NFL coaches don't want in their locker room.

The ethics of sitting out games and if the players who do, have character issues that some NFL coaches don't want in their locker room. That was not my take on this thread. My take on it has always been that this is a symptom of labeling (incorrectly) some games as important, and others as less important or meaningless because our population has lost the fundamental appreciation for competition and now only judges results and awards.

So the big thing with these decisions is that it's a meaningless game. Once you're out of the race for a conference title, the rest of the games are meaningless. I don't like it. Just my opinion and you know what they say about opinions

There aren't that many can't miss top 10 picks.

I think that if somebody skips a season or a big part of one he's risking slipping considerably in the draft. When you look at healthy draft or free agent busts, I think that one reason that they don't make it is because they don't really care about football. That's a big investment to gamble on a guy who may just take the money and dog it until his contract year.
