We are a small school. We have about 230 in the high school and around 240 in the middle school. Because we are so small we have trouble filling coaching slots, not just football but all sports. Our middle school has traditionally been not very good at football. We average around 35 kids, but usually only 2 coaches. They are good guys but not guys that are devoted to becoming good coaches. Its been more like "Who wants to do MS football this year?" Obviously this hurts our varsity program.
What I am wanting to do and my question is "has anyone done something similar?" I want to combine MS and HS for practice purposes. I have enough coaches (using a few college community guys) to have 4 on offense and 4 on defense. So everyone 7-12 is getting coached by the "varsity coaches" and learning how i want it done. I imagine the structure of practice along the lines of...
45 minutes...Indy, group, etc.............Varsity OFF / Middle School DEF 45 minutes...indy, group, etc..............Middle school OFF / Varsity DEF
30 minutes...Middle school team / varsity special teams
30 minutes...middle school goes home / varsity team
i know thats a rough outline and would require a lot more planning and organization, but has anyone ever done something like this?

What are your state rules in regards to this? I coached at a small school that was roughly the same size as yours, we had enough coaches for each level but there was one coach who was the S&C for both levels. However, we had to tread lightly in season as it was against regulations to have a HS coach working with a MS team (yes, even within the same school). He was only allowed to do S&C type things with players otherwise it wuold be deemed recruiting.
I suggest you look into this first.

If it's legal, that looks like a great idea and your younger kids not only will get coached better, but also get a taste of the big time and create a little more excitement in your younger grades.

There are no rules as far as high school coaches coaching middle school players, we are actually together as a school with one principal
ABC Middle High School.
As far as laibility, the varsity will be in one color practice jersey, the middle school another and never they shall meet...

The biggest obstacle I would see are on game days. Do you have a 9th grade, 10th grade, or JV schedules and does your area separate 7th grade and 8th grade into different teams or is it middle school all together? If you have three game days a week it puts some restrictions on practices because you will be short coaches and in some cases players.
