Worst article I've ever read. I played and coached in TONS of games and can't tell you 1 speech, I'm sure I could recall adjustments but speeches and tag lines never did nor do it for me. I blame Hollywood...all these sports movies with the underdog down at halftime, coach rallies team with speech, team overcomes odds to win. Makes people think that if you can rally the troops with a speech, you can beat anybody and that it has nothing to do with anything else (as long as you're spread). You should ALWAYS be spread. I like how coaches follow this lead and think they are going to talk, berate, insult, yell, or whatever else their way to better football instead of teaching solid fundamentals and growing from there to more sophisticated, higher level things. Again you should always be spread.

www.theplayerstribune.com/pj-fleck-western-michigan-keep-rowing/this type of crap is what disgusts me the most I mean the guy has had success, no arguing that..he's about to be a mult-millionare and I'm pulling down a smooth 55k so what the hell do I know? but do you think that Saban, Rockne, Switzer, Bear, Hayes, Wilkinson, etc ever WROTE an article for the local paper about how THEY gave a halftime speech that turned the season around? I tried to count the amount of times this guy referenced himself in this article about his team but got a headache and quit I don't know that it's just in football either, the entire archetype of manhood has changed I think, we have gone from appreciating the strong silent type and the virtue of humility to the shameless self promoter and his "brand". You think Lincoln could get elected president today? A man of few words who wouldn't look good on TV?..forget about it, the idiocracy would laugh him off the stage. My dad used to always say that empty can rattles the loudest, I liked that, but I guess the world has moved on from that idea...so now being a successful football coach in major college football has a lot to with how many tweets get liked, videos of you doing "coachey" things posted everywhere...and writing articles about what an unbelievable motivator you are. not sure how this ties in with what you guys are talking about...sorry..but damn I wish that Saban would use his platform to come out publicly one day and tell all these guys to just shut the f*ck up and coach.......but I don't imagine that would be his style. Worst article I've ever read. I played and coached in TONS of games and can't tell you 1 speech, I'm sure I could recall adjustments but speeches and tag lines never did nor do it for me. most of those speeches are straight from the heart, wether its fire up the troops, break some stuff, calm their nerves, fight like there is no tomorrow or whatever, who writes a pregame speech? i may know what premise i am gonna talk about, but its gut stuff. halftime is a never ever know what that may be... PJ sounds kinda fake to me, and I like his energy etc... but that read sounds like its made up to make him sound good. idk...

It's kind of funny hearing about everyone wanting to run the spread/HUNH. I'm a life-long Nebraska fan, and all I hear from fellow Cornheads is "We have to run the I!"

I think at that level (college) fans want to see what has traditionally brought them success. Nebraska is nostalgic for the Osborne days, Michigan fans hated the Rich Rod spread. Brady Hoke went 11-2 his first year after replacing RR using his style of spread offense and RR's loaded team. I'd argue RR might have won a title that year if they would have given him one more. We are in a funny business guys.

This....my first year at a new school. I run wing t. I will run the sweep series all day long. love it. After our first game, in which we ran the ball 45 times and threw 3, all the fans could talk about was the shotgun trips formation and the snag concept we ran 2x. QB hit the flat receiver, nice gains. Fans thought i was don coryell. I have a story just like that. We pulled a sizable upset a few years back where we won a game 48-27. Run game was workin like a Mother.... So the safety is flying dowhill w/ absolutely no regard for pass at all whatsoever. Game ends we ran the ball 50+ times and were 3/5 passing for about 120 yards and 2 TD's. I got a group of parents about 10 or so approach after the game very congratulatory. Then one dad asks me are we going to CONTINUE to take a pass first approach? I said, what do you mean? he goes on to tell me he can't believe how much I was willing to throw the ball. I told him you know we we only threw the ball 5 times and only had 3 completions. He could not believe it. All they remembered was us completing 3 bombs on the post route for 120 yards even though we ran for 420 yards and 6 TD's. The fan/parent truly has a different perception of football. So did you continue to be pass first? 😜

I think that you have to take the fans feelings into consideration.

not true you can come back and win with fake 23 blast with a backside george reverse BUT only if followed by the Annexation of Puerto Rico! Seriously a school in MN has a play called that and in their State Title game ran it on a 3rd and long late in the 4th quarter of a 35-35 tie and it went for a HUGE gain and set up the winning TD with less than 1:00 to go

They could have run that every play and won by 80. But no, they try and win, but not cover the spread. Guarantee the coach had a lot of money on this game.

I have an issue with the opposite side of the coaching carousel: guys taking over programs and completely trying to reinvent the wheel, culture wise. I won't name drop, but there was a guy that took over an established FBS program and basically said "you guys don't work hard enough, this team and program is chit" and ran it into the ground. I had watched practices under the previous regime and the coaching staff was upbeat, positive and it was very evident that the players had great respect for the program and tradition. The school had a few rough years, the old guard retired and the practices under the new HC were absolutely horrendous. They screamed, yelled, berated the players and said that the school's previous record of excellence meant nothing to them. Players that had been recruited by the previous staff transferred (even starters..) and the wheels on the bus came flying off.
