Oregon is the most HUNH there is and they just told their coach DEUCES This is true but I read an article from footballscoop.com saying that they're strictly looking for young spread coaches with a hurry up offense (plus Jim McElwain). I get that that's Oregon's identity, but shite man. Just hire the best coach available regardless of his offense

He was their 3rd choice at best though. Their first few options were offensive guys. I agree to your point though. There are some great HC that are defensive guys first. The thing that pisses me off the most about the coaching carousel is the non major 5 coach that goes 12-0 at a school that can only dream about a Sugar or Fiesta Bowl, gets his team to this bowl, but jumps ship to a middle of the pack Pac12 or SEC school before the bowl game where he may never play on New years again. But he'll get paid. sports.usatoday.com/ncaa/salaries/I'm not saying for them not to take the job, just coach in the bowl game before you totally refocus on your new team. I know they need to get a jump on recruiting but they can juggle both. There's 80 something coaches that are in bowl games who also need to recruit during this period.

But it creates a conflict of interest. If you work for Coke and give your two weeks notice that you're going to Pepsi they just walk you out that day and pay you not to work for two weeks.

It's not unprecedented in college football. There are coaches who have been hired elsewhere, who finish out their bowl game. Also have been coaches who have been fired, but coach out the bowl game.

Well, I guess not everybody is fortunate enough to have a 'Life Champion' coach who runs HUNH (sort of) and goes out and pays $1 mil for a DC who gives up OVER A MILE of offense to the worst teams on the schedule while pissing away a Sugar Bowl bid.

If you win they don't care what you run. Same chit is happening in basketball. If you win, you can run what you run. If you lose, "why are you not shooting 3's every possession like Golden State?" Winning cures everything. yes it does, but no it doesnt. agree but I dont. I know here if someone tried to put some wing T in, parents and those admin that are monday night football gurus but never ever coached a kid a day in their life, would ask why your running that 1950s offense? you should run spread...... school A runs spread and scores points, why arent we? well dipchit, we run the wing t because we are the under 6ft school with 185lb linemen and our qb cant run or throw, but dang he is smart and can reverse pivot with the best of em! lol. what happend to the days of football coaches go to a school, gets head job and stays for next 25 yrs, is left alone, goes to basketball games in the winter and kids surround him, watches spring baseball practices and games and parents call him coach,,,,admin treats him with respect..... i want tha job..... want in 1 hand and chit in other and see which one fills up, right. lol

Fans want to win but they also want a show. Unless they have both, they aren't happy. Administrators want happy fans and their money. Football is entertainment to everyone who is not actively participating on gameday. That's just how it is. Fans also get tired of the same show year after year. Even if you're winning, if it looks the same 4 or 5 years in a row, they'll find reasons to gripe about why you're not winning even bigger. Fans aren't ever going to be happy. It doesn't matter. A team could go 15-0 and win the state title by 40 and fans would still b!tch. I didn't make up those numbers...that happened at a state finals game where a team was up by 40 in the 4th...on their way to win their 6th title in 8 years and you'd have thought they were in the 4th quarter of game 10 in a 0-10 season. I and one of my friends had to say something to them and it turned into a bit of a scene. At the LSU v Alabama game in 2011 that I referenced in my earlier post, to hear the fans talk Saban is worst hire in the history of football. He couldn't cut it at Miami, yada yada yada... Any coach who listens to the fans is the same as a QB who sees the pass rush...you may get lucky and make a few plays here and there but really...it's already over. this!!

I know you didn't do it, but I don't group Herman in with the visor-wearing douches. Herman seems like he knows a lot about motivation and relationships with players. I've never seen a team play harder for a coach than what I've seen his guys do (excluding SMU, Navy, and Memphis games). I wouldn't put him in that group, either. Actually, about the only true "visor-wearing douche" I can think of off the top of my head in FBS ball is Lane Kiffin. Herman's a good coach. I am surprised he was as hot a commodity as he was after those 3 losses, though. He's 9-3 and 4th in his division at Houston (only 1 fewer loss than LSU had this year), yet LSU and Texas got into a bidding war for this guy as if he were Nick Saban or Urban Meyer. Kiffin had been a douche but he seems to have reinvented himself and offensively he's really really done a nice job at Bama. Herman got PAID off of the work he did at OSU and the projection that with similar (or better resources) he'll be a force and I agree with that. Market value is a tricky deal.

That's not the problem.
Problem is the weak-kneed, chicken-hearted ADMINISTRATORS who listen to the parents and-or "fans" and fire coaches who are good guys doing good jobs sometimes in difficult situations.

That's what people don't like about Tracey Claeys at Minnesota right now. All he wants to do is coach football instead of tweeting and whatever else. He won eight games this year and fans want him fired because he's not making big speeches like the previous coaches.

Fun fact - buddy of mine coached with Kiffin, said Kiffin stole his shoes (Nikes). When he called him on it Kiffin denied it and just walked away. Buddy was absolutely dumbfounded, said, "We got free stuff anyway, why did he need to take it?" Said he liked him up until then.

If you put in a two weeks notice and they don't honor it, more than likely you'll be able to get compensated if you follow up on it, at least in Ohio. My company has had to pay out for not allowing people to work out their 2 weeks.

In honor of the collegiate coaching carousel, I thought I'd share a little rant. Nothing irks me like these AD's who only want coaches with an "offensive mind". By which they basically mean that they want a guy who runs a HUNH and is likely under 45 years old. Paul Johnson and Ken Niumatalolo are great "offensive minds" but they likely will never get a offer to coach at a bigger school because they don't back up their QB and run HUNH (not that they would want new jobs anyway). I get why AD's want an explosive offense. It's entertaining (not to me though) and it puts people in seats. But people insist on hiring for entertainment over hiring the right guy to lead a program. If coaches are judged by wins and losses, then why did Chad Morris get so much buzz before announcing he'll stay at SMU yesterday? He's won 7 games in two years and his defenses are horrible. But he runs an exciting offense though! This is just a tragic time of the year IMO when good men lose their jobs at the HS/NCAA level by people who mostly don't know anything about football aside from what talking heads on ESPN say. Before we know it there will be two offenses in football. In the NFL, they will continue on with the "100 ways to run the West Coast" philosophy. In HS and College, everything will be spread. And forget about defensive-minded HC's too. I don't think it's 100% that way but I do think there is SOME truth to this. IMO, all coaches need to win but I think a heavy run first coach needs to maybe win more and win more often and will get the hook maybe a little quicker than a passing first type guy. I also think perception is reality. I think many coaches back their guys up a couple of yards and suddenly spectators think they are pass first coaches when stats don't actually show that. But b/c of the gun/pistol formation they give off that perception/ hence more "legitimacy" in the eyes of some. On a personal note, as an option guy was a HUGE fan of ND when Lou Holtz was there. As well as Nebraska through the Osborne era into the Frank Solich years. Again IMO, both coaches were let go prematurely and neither school has had the same success/mystique since.

After our first game, in which we ran the ball 45 times and threw 3, all the fans could talk about was the shotgun trips formation and the snag concept we ran 2x. QB hit the flat receiver, nice gains. Fans thought i was don coryell.

I could reinvent myself, too, if I were coaching the best talent in my league every year. I have said this before in other threads: Beware of Bama assistants. They are as expendable as a q-tip. Saban won national titles at Bama with two other OC's before Kiffin got there. Both of those coordinators are now at Florida - that's FLORIDA, not Northwest New Mexico Tech - and they suck on offense. Kirby Smart leaves after four national titles as DC and the defense looks even better without him. Meanwhile, Smart's UGA defense hasn't looked too great.
Not saying these guys aren't good coaches, but damn, the machine keeps running no matter who they hire. That would make me hesitant to hire someone from the Bama program. I would prefer to hire someone who appears to be a major reason for the program's success.

Run game was workin like a Mother.... So the safety is flying dowhill w/ absolutely no regard for pass at all whatsoever. Game ends we ran the ball 50+ times and were 3/5 passing for about 120 yards and 2 TD's. I got a group of parents about 10 or so approach after the game very congratulatory. Then one dad asks me are we going to CONTINUE to take a pass first approach? I said, what do you mean? he goes on to tell me he can't believe how much I was willing to throw the ball. I told him you know we we only threw the ball 5 times and only had 3 completions. He could not believe it. All they remembered was us completing 3 bombs on the post route for 120 yards even though we ran for 420 yards and 6 TD's. The fan/parent truly has a different perception of football.

I blame Hollywood...all these sports movies with the underdog down at halftime, coach rallies team with speech, team overcomes odds to win. Makes people think that if you can rally the troops with a speech, you can beat anybody and that it has nothing to do with anything else (as long as you're spread).
