Is this something that could cause more problems than its worth? I see it being a potential distraction and could lead to problems if the team isn't doing well one year.
I ask because this situation is happening a school near my home town. I have never been in this situation so I was wondering your thoughts.

I've never heard of anything like that around here. There could be a front runner long time assistant that most people would expect to get it, but now a days every school has a procedure to follow. You never know who is gonna apply for the job when it's posted.

You never know who is gonna apply for the job when it's posted. And most schools around here are like that. This one hired a hometown guy and he is "the next HC." Just wondering if anyone has had any experience with this

Is that really a thing? I'm in a program where our HC has been the guy for 30 years. We have a hometown guy who is on staff that is expected to replace him whenever the HC decides to hang it up. He is the principal's younger brother as well, so that won't hurt him, but he knows he still isn't guaranteed the job. As already mentioned most schools have a procedure that they are required to follow. There might be a good old boy system in place, but at the very least they have to follow procedure and you just never know.

Apparently that's the deal, and it seems to be causing problems in the program from what I'm understanding. It was just a rumor that I heard so it could be complete bullsh!t, but the program has been less competitive since this guy came on board so there may be something there.

This happened at a school that I know of and it wasn't pretty. They had a long-time coach who had been vert successful (300+ wins) but had made enemies over the years and hadn't had as much success (but had not been BAD) lately. The board wanted to fire him but got a lot of push-back. They compromised. They gave him another year, a farewell tour, but hired a "coach in waiting" who would replace him the next year.
So, there was an assistant, a former player, who hadn't been hired by the HC (He was well qualified, BTW, not just some hometown knucklehead) and was going to replace the HC. They had an OK season, not horrible or great. After that season the old HC destroyed the board's story that he was retiring by taking the job at the neighboring district, where he had a decent record before finally retiring. The new HC is still there and the team has had the same kind of record that they had under the old HC- some playoff years, some not.
