here's how I assume it went down
big win...everybody pumped, kids getting rowdy in the locker room...some kid goes and grabs a bottle of syrup from the pancake breakfast that moms did that morning and some funny fat lineman kid goes Farley with it and decides to pour it on his belly so the other kids find this to be the height of humor and start taking pictures of themselves looking like they are licking the syrup..everybody laughing
..bout this time coach comes in to run the little bastardos out of the field house so him and the staff can go celebrate in the adult way..he finds billy bob slathered in syrup and kids start saying "coach take the picture like we did...take the picture like we did!!"
it's a big win and he's happy so coach says what the heck i'll do a little something and they'll get a kick out of it
any other scenario than that is hard to defend, but I bet it was something like that, not necessarily smart, but not Sandusky status either...but then the 2nd string QB (it's always the 2nd string QB) shows his picture to his 2nd string daddy Todd who sees his opportunity to get coach fired and piss off first string daddy Mark who thinks he's so great with his cooler car and still hot wife so he decides to get his wife the 2nd string mommy to make a big fuss about it
and here we are

When my brother was in school he said they did naked victory jumping jacks and used the shower as a slip and slide.
I just said okay and went about the other way.
This is why I don't go into locker unless I have to.

Wow... Just.. Wow... This is one of the few times where I am in complete agreement with a coach chastised. This guy needs to be fired and then sent to a therapist. He's going to lucky if he isn't facing some kind of charges over this. cops looked into it, no wrong doing was found (interesting right?) parents & players have rallied around the guy saying they support him which is even more strange.... He lucked out then... He'd be in jail if he'd actually (friggin' gross!!) licked the kid.. And, those that are rallying around him need to take a step back. This guy showed an incredible lack of judgement in this situation.

there is a big difference with shower surfing, which is what we called it, and it was just us high school kids, and a coach licking syrup from a kids belly button

What the coach did was wrong. I am pretty sure most states also have laws about using a recording device in the locker room. When this is done, the kid doing the filming may be in trouble.

A small part of me hopes that is how it plays out. Phones are ruining our society. I don't want to open a can of worms here though. The coach who did this was totally in the wrong whether he actually licked the syrup or not. Great example of below the line behavior.

Our "Shower Team" in hs would fill up the 32 gallon laundry cans with bubbles and water. They would team up and each team would have a kid get in each one and they would joist in the lockeroom. The final would take place in the showers. They used pool floaties and had judges for where the contact took place to determine the winner.
They did other sick and twisted shi t like above. Rubber flooring but still, it's unbelieveable no one got hurt. Times have sure changed. And that was only 2003.

This is why I don't go into locker unless I have to. There's only two camps. Those that almost climb in their locker to change and the ones sliding across the shower naked.

I miss the days when NOBODY had a camera on their phone.... heck ya man you could lick up all the syrup you wanted and you'd be covered, plausible deniability whole thing boils down to professionalism for me...I hate to sound like an old guy that just complains, i'm not even that old, but I really don't remember seeing that many coaches getting all "lit" in the locker room with the players after a big win when I was playing. I once was coaching a middle school game and lost on the last play. As the clock ticked zero we lined up so shake hands the coach from the other team was in a full blown dog pile with the kids in the middle of the end zone....we just kinda stood around and waited for dude to get done gesticulating....I'm all for passion but dang man....it did lead to one of my favorite post game exchanges once things calmed down dude: "hey bro great game" me: "thanks you too, good luck rest of the way" dude"hey broseph how do we match up to (other good team in the district that we played the week before and they had next week) me: "they are way better than you" dude: ".........."..at any rate...we're supposed to be the grown men in the situation, I think acceptable celebrations include: fist pumps double fist pumps triple claps squat claps walking down the sideline in the bottom of a fist pump bear hug a guy who is a great kid that did something awesome unacceptable: the bottom of a dog pile the jumping hip bump thing (this is becoming more and more common, maybe some of you can pull it off, but most look silly) running back and forth in front of the stands to "pump the crowd" dramatic faint just my list...yours may vary What about a "jump in the air fist pump then dropping the "X" gesture upon landing? Can't say I have done that, just wondering.

camera phones in the locker room..... too many pregame locker room rants, involving very creative ways to pump the guys up, breaking things, cursing, spitting and yelling, head butting walls (or players helmets for that matter), kicking the bottles of water, snapping a clipboard(cut my hand so bad I needed stitches, blood everywhere, kids thought it was awesome I didnt care-we won it was worth it), the list goes on and on. several caught on camera phone and the kids replayed some of it, I have asked no phones out during pregame or halftime....
licking syrup kinda takes the (pan)cake...not seen that one b4.
btw, the parents are bat chit crazy. holy hell

I do have a few questions, though. 1) This is the 2nd time I have read about a coach addressing another coach as a "bro" or anything related to "bro." Do the grown men that you coach against actually talk like that?? 2) What the he!! are squat claps?

I too was wondering what the heck squat claps were.
In regards to the coaches who say they don't go in the locker room, I do hope that there are coaches in there monitoring and supervising it. A lack of supervision can be one way to get into some serious trouble as well. It can't simply be an out of sight out of mind kind of thing. I know we have coaches who sweep through the locker room every few minutes to be sure there isn't bullying or a fight taking place. I know when I was in high school there were at least 2 fights in the locker room that never became known to the coach. Most red-blooded coaches may think that's a good thing but not in today's litigious society.
As for showering, I haven't coached a team yet where the kids actually shower. I find it disgusting that they don't. The one time they did was after a game when there was a school dance and they all wore tights to cover up their junk. I thought that was weird too. As a player, we would shower after almost every practice, the equipment guy would provide towels, and nothing remotely close to inappropriate ever happened.

Squat clap is when you say like "attaboy jo" and you start sinking down to a quarter squat while clapping...usually ends with a full bent over hands on your knees position, while you stare intently at the next play

I have been at places where no coaches go into the locker room, and there is no coaches office in there to begin with; to me that is insane. Not trying to pirate the thread; but from what I have seen the sexually inappropriate, borderline hazing, type stuff occurs more at more affluent schools. Where I went to school, and the lower income schools I have coached at would have the occasional fight in the locker room but the weird stuff (soaping up playing in the showers, touching a teammate below the belt) only seen at the upper middle class places I have been. Coincidentally, one of these places was one that I referenced above as having no locker room supervision. This wealthier private school had some history of hazing with the previous regime, and of the gross sexual nature. The new HC, who started same year I did, addressed it verbally, but never went into the locker room to check. After a while I noticed a lot of younger kids werent going into the locker room to change; come to find out that there was a game being played where people would sneak up behind one another grab you by your genitals and lift. The older guys felt it was okay (because they had to deal with it when they were younger), but I didnt want to deal with the repercussions. So everyday after practice I made sure the field got cleaned then stood in the locker room for 20 minutes to make sure nothing went on; initially players asked 'why' to which I responded, 'I don't want to lose my job because you can't stop screwing around'. It sucked, especially since all the other coaches were the type who thought of themselves above this type of stuff, but there was no more locker room shenanigans going on. I just don't get how a grown man would allow this type of nonsense to go on, let alone take part in it.

In our field house we have a small foyer you step into. The door on the right takes you into the coach's office. The door straight ahead takes you into the locker room. We always have a talk about no hazing, no horseplay, etc.
Coaches go in the locker room all the time and we can hear what is going on in there for the most part anyways.
The kids started to shut the door into the locker room one year. It started to get loud in there. We removed the door the next day. LOL

There is a tradition at a school I was at where if you step on a logo, you get the chit beaten out of you. How do you explain that to a lawyer? That seems more like a gang type of mentality than that of a team.

After reading the story, watching the video, and reading the follow up articles the coach is a jackass and I wouldn't want him running my program. Also, the mom is a screwball and is going nuts over this. I get that she's pissed but she could have taken a dramatically better approach. Her son, from all that I've read, was a willing participant in the deal and was not traumatized as she said (not excusing the coach's behavior, just saying the kid isn't scarred for life). The mom managed to garner a tremendous amount of hate for her son in his senior year, just as they're going into playoffs. Bummer that things had to go sideways, instead of having awesome memories for life he's going to have this goat rodeo pop into his head whenever he thinks of high school football.
