212 The difference between hot water and steam is 1 degree. That 1 degree is the difference between transformation and stagnation. That 1 degree between water sitting there and water at work. Chemically speaking, that's not really true. Water and steam both exist at "212," the difference is the latent entropy of evaporation. Chris Clement: Seriously, you are such a buzz kill at times! Why the hell is someone as smart as you coaching football in CANADA? @op: See my signature for other ideas...

Not really a quote, but a couple years ago, we stole something from Stanford. "1/11". If you concentrate all of your effort into doing your 1/11 and worry about what you can control, then you will have the best chance of being successful. The kids loved it and rallied around it. Put it on our t-shirts and wore it during pre-game warm ups every game

Only RCAF-Chemical Engineering?
In that case you're no Howard Wolowitz (NASA astronaut) or Sheldon Cooper (genius from Texas with requisite Football knowledge).
I'm so disillusioned.

I've developed a mental image that he is either some uber nerd who passes time coaching football at the Canadian University level or the slightest possibility he is a minor league version of 007 James Bond keeping the Canadian tundra & ice cap safe from the threats of international villains!

A couple of mr favorites.
"He that is good for making excuses is seldom good for anything else." -Benjamin Franklin
"No excuses and no sob stories. Life is full of excuses if you're looking. I have no time to gripe over misfortune. I don't waste time looking back." Junior Seau
"Accept the challenges so that you can feel the exhilaration of victory." -George Patton
Some rugby stuff too. Not a quote as much as a motto (though not really kid appropriate, "No d***heads" - motto of the New Zealand rugby team, whose leaders are the ones who sweep the locker room after each game as a symbol of humility. Also had one "Champions Do Extra".
"Well you know you’re really dedicated to something when you lie about being hurt so no one will make you stop. " - Richie McCaw

Put that on our camp T-shirts when I took over a losing program in 2010.
Except the 'M' stood for "Morale."

We do a HEAT award every week (hustle, effort, attitude, tenacity). As coaches wr call out the letter and kids give the characteristic. So we say H and they say Hustle. Then E and every week someone says intensity...every time...it's funny!

Not sure if that's a great weight room quote, but it is great philosophy.

I don't like quotes like this because they just aren't true. Genetics plays a huge part in high school football and many games are won primarily because one team just has more gifted players than the other, not because they work harder.
I like quotes that encourage hard work, but the ones that make it seem like any group of kids can win a championship if they just worker harder than everyone else just aren't realistic.

I like quotes that encourage hard work, but the ones that make it seem like any group of kids can win a championship if they just worker harder than everyone else just aren't realistic. Great point. At one stop we had a kid who never once in 4 years missed a workout. He outworked most everybody in the weight room and in conditioning. He just couldn't put muscle on. He is literally one of the worst football players I have ever coached. It had nothing to do with his attitude or work ethic as he was truly a remarkable guy. He just was not a football player by any stretch of the imagination. In addition to being a grinder in the weight room he also graduated at the top of his class with a 4.0, and several academic scholarship offers.

I think the quote just emphasizes the idea of working hard. He may not be "equal" athletically but everyone has an equal opportunity to be successful in life. The example of the kid who never once missed 4 years of a workout is great. So it didn't equate to playing time but obviously his understanding of working to be successful led to being successful academically. Developing young men in this most important job about being a football coach and it seems to have worked out for him.
