I guess I just don't see the point in turning a kid away simply because they've never played before. It doesn't seem like there's any upside to that and it seems counter to what we're trying to accomplish.
If the guy proves to be a problem, can't make grades, or something like that then sure you have to be able to remove them, but if they are doing what they're supposed to I can't see treating them any different than anybody else in the program.

I've had 2 success story's that came out senior year, but both played in middle school. One was a TE BB kid. The other was a DT Lax kid. Both were All-District that one year.

we bring any kid willing to come out...we always need bag holders! However, we dont let seniors come out if they did not participate in Spring football. By then, yes, they are much too far behind.

I love these guys, so long as they are coachable and good teammates.
We had a kid 2 years ago who started both ways for us (OLB and WR) and won our highest program award.
Last year, we had a kid who worked hard but wasn't particularly great. He ended up starting the last two games at WR and really bailed us out because our starter got got hurt. Ended up catching a long TD for us in a critical game.
Other times, these guys don't break through, but they are valuable on specials and scout and understand their roles from the get-go.
I wouldn't turn my nose up at anyone in this day and age. If they're not crapbags, we need to find a way to set them up to contribute.

I've had a couple who have been great and really helpful to our program. Outside of the other sport athletes trying football late, we have had some poor students/behavioral issue guys who really succeeded and improved their lives by coming out late. Player 1 was a Junior who couldn't make a 2.0 and was ineligible unit his JR. year. He worked hard and made his grades, plus worked hard in the weight room. He was. 6'2 245 TE, who was behind a multi year starter. We go into week one and he got put in at guard for us. Our guards pull 65-70% of the time. Well he was an absolutely wrecking ball and tore people up for two years. He grew into a 270 Guard who could run but was a non qualifier because of his first two and half years. He didn't sulk though, went to community college and has made a good life for his self.
Player 2 had a rough upbringing with his dad in jail, and constant behavior issues. He was fighting, and involved in the gang life. He made a decision that he wanted to do something else and got his self eligible for his senior year. He was skinny, but he could run. He played safety fearlessly, and played in the box like a missile. His behavior improved and he hasn't had any issues. He will graduate in a couple weeks, after basically going from 10th to 12 grade in basically a year.
So maybe they will make your team better as starters or contributors, but probably not. There is a much greater chance that you will help them more and get them on a much better path in life. I've had guys starting in Power 5 schools, 1 about to go to rookie training camp, but I'm probably more proud of my guys who came out late and changed their lives.

I guess it is a compliment to the program when a kid (never played before) comes out junior or senior year. Do you ever have any success with guys like this? when i was still coaching varsity ball, we had 2 kids come out....they were soccer converts (YEA!). we found ways to use skills they already had to allow them to contribute. -- one kid was fast, and could run forever, he became a decent kick returner for us -- another kid was slower, but could keep a reciever in front of him - was able to track hip movement real well and anticipate - he became a good corner for us. were these kids great? No... but we found ways for them to contribute because they came out and deserved a shot. you have to get to know the kids, and see what they are good at - and use the skills they already have.

I have had great success with a lot them, especially if they are BB players.
Our BB coach isn't a fan of "his" kids playing football. Well he is pissed this year. Starting Center is playing 6'6, 225. 6th man played last year now he is getting big looks 6'3 WR. Another one will help at LB probably won't start but 6'0 214.
Surprised some are playing. our BB team made the Final 4 and Elite Eight last 2 years. But we have had 19 kids go to school the last 2 years and that changes things.
