I use a contract, but it's mainly directed at the parents and for them to leave me alone. 90% of the stuff was put in there to establish the culture that it's not Pop Warner.
Player rules are basically: don't lie, don't be a schwans, and don't get in trouble (drugs, referrals, bad grades).

General rules for the team: Don't do anything that would reflect poorly on yourself, your upbringing, or your team. Ignorance is not an excuse.
For my position group: Be on time. Do your best. Don't talk when I'm talking. Don't be a dbag.
The only time I've had an issue with the "common sense" rule is when I was working with kids who really had no idea what was socially acceptable. I'm talking about kids who smoke weed with their parents, get into fistfights with their fathers, curse out their mothers, think the word "bruh" is a sign of respect ... Those kids, I needed to constantly be in their ear about what was acceptable and what wasn't because I was the first adult to ever draw a line in the sand for them. In those situations, I can definitely understand all those rules 60zgo was talking about.

Bobby Bowden only had one rule, "Don't embarrass the program: and I decide what is embarrassing!"

The biggest thing our HC says to the kids all the time that I think is good advice is to know your audience. Acceptable language in the locker room is different from team dinner with the moms around, the trainers room, etc. Know your audience and act accordingly. Exactly how I present things as well. We say "play the game," which means play by the rules. There are rules for every setting in life- church rules, classroom rules, courtroom rules, home rules, street rules...play the game by the law of the land. The only thing I ask the kids is to remember that by wearing our uniform they represent more than just themselves and their family- every person in this community, player who has played before and the ones to come after us, and do NOTHING to jeopardize our status on or off the field
