This just came to me... i am really curious
what things have you gotten rid of as a football coach...
i do not mean the old blocking bag you tossed in the trash
i mean what things from the game, your playbook, coaching, drills have you just completely gotten rid of...
i am guilty of seeing things offensively and thinking man i wanna run that too... we see this cool play, and that cool tag, and this cool blah blah blah... and we want to add it
but i am more interested now in trimming the fat as much as possible. I think we waste a lot of time practice wise and during ST
i want to start scrapping some things
just curious as to things any of you have gotten rid of
for example
i know coach plaa got rid of practice pants in his program... they wear shorts and VB knee pads... awesome
we scrapped
some scrapped PAT... screw it , we are going for 2 every time... we just need to get more than half... and all that extra practice time on 2 pointers makes us a better team in GL/Red zone situations
any ideas of how you have trimmed the fat would be awesome, id love to get a discussion going on it

I lost 17 pounds last season - trimmed some good fat...
Gained back 11 so far haha...

The football fat we trimmed was we got rid of Walkthrough Thursday - we called it run through Thursday anyhow - hate the word walk...
With the new tackling rules we had to adjust how we roll...
So we actually ramped up our week:
Monday - Defensive install and teaching - control tempo - did KO and KOR
Tuesday - Offensive install and teach - control tempo - did punt and PR
Wednesday - Defensive Get after it day - thud/live tempo - depending on needs of team and time of year will determine which one - did FG and FG Block
Thursday - Offensive Kick some a$$ day - thud/live tempo - depending on needs of team and time of year will determine which one - Hands and onside team...
So we started the week easy and ramped up... Loved it...

Now, this was a little bit ago, but at my last coaching stop before my semi retirement, I got rid of the standard 238 backpedal/break on ball drills DB coaches seem to do all day in season.

This is a great thread and the question we should always ask ourselves. we try to be pretty minimalist in general. If we add a blitz or play we take one out. Try to have no wasted time anywhere. Short practice short coaches meetings. Scrapped film grades, in practice conditioning, Thursday night meals, lift and run 2 days a week in summer instead of 3 or 4 like we used to, no tackling to the ground in practice, no "juice" drills, no big dramatic pre-game speeches, no playbook.. We basically tried to eliminate as much of the extra bull$hit as possible and it's been great to us.

I love this. To me this is what all off season should be about. Trying to stream line your stuff, and simplifying it for your kids. I broke it down this season into the follow... What does every offense have or need? Regardless of style everyone has an inside run, an outside run, a counter, at least 1 quick pass, at least 1 shot taker, and a screen. Now some have more passes or more runs but all have that. So basically get ur style or what ur comfy calling and what ur kids can learn and break it down to this. Then add a couple that slant it the way you want to go, I like the practice pants idea... Shorts and knee pads are cheaper. Also wanna preface this by saying I have became a fan of super fast tempo. Trimming down makes this easier. You usually go against a vanilla defense that is on their heels.

We scrapped conditioning a few years ago and we have been able to make some runs in the playoffs. I think we are fresher and healthier.
Best scrap was Saturday practice. Everyone from players to coaches to parents to wives all happier and I think it brings excitement to Monday's.
We started punting from regular offensive formations. We don't install fakes just run our offense if we have a favorable look. It's made teams really passive.
We started setting up our return based on blitz concepts. We just wrap the blitzes to the short side numbers. Gets rid of all the installs and if they decide to get cute we have our d on the field.
We scrapped zone so we just run gap schemes.

Scrapped static stretching years ago, just dynamic warmup,'tell
Kids to stretch at home. We do a short one on Friday s in pregame just to look fancy for the crowd. Only grade on effort now. Easy way is look to see if their arms are pumping hard, cause they only move hard if you are going full speed, they slow down or stop if you are jogging or loafing. Not much conditioning now, tempo tempo in practice, we still do a little but not much.

We cut out the shorts and helmet on Thursdays because our players seemed to lose focus on those days.
We made that a shoulder pads & shells type of day but we're still flying around except taking the ball carrier to the ground. It helped our guys focus instead of playing around during practices.

[ Everywhere I've coaches we have done this too, except where I currently am at, now I do with my position guys, and of course we do settle noise every day, but not eberyine on staff does, I think we should tinker it and all go to "absolute" every day drills like you said |

We got rid of our more complex pursuit drill. We used to have a complicated breakdown of who was supposed to fit on which yard line on the sideline. We don't do that any more because it almost never broke down that way during the game. We do one pursuit drill in camp, but is really more a conditioning drill and having kids learn to chase the ball. We all run to the same spot (where the ball goes), I know that this isn't exactly how it breaks down in games either, but we just think that as long as the kids hustle to the ball, that lends itself to good pursuit in the games. |

We have scrapped:
1) JV guys on SPT- we put the best we have out there
2) Actual Playbook Distribution (everything is online)
3) Extra Conditioning inseason
4) Punishment running
5) PAT - we go for 2 at an 80% clip
6) 3 down football - we play with 4 downs most areas of the field
7) Being under center
8) Organized Team Stretching

I coach with a guy who has coached in the NFL. We are seldom in full gear once the season starts. In fact two weeks out of the year we didnt wear pads at all (weeks 5 and 9). I thought he was nuts.
1. We beat a top ten 10 in the state that runs the DW WITHOUT practicing in pads.
2. We lost to a state runner up and held them to their second lowest point total not practicing in pads. And this was a Stanford Type power team.
(this went against everything i believed in as a defensive coach btw and when he first proposed it I couldn't sleep at night lol)

Otherwise non of us come on on Saturdays. Coaches watch film immediately following game. Coaches and athletes watch filtered version on Monday. |

In our state we have five conditioning days before we can wear full pads. That was always a Saturday. We used to use that or "Toughness" drills, one-on-ones and such. One day the boss, out of the blue, decided that we were wasting a practice and we all agreed. No more "Toughness" day.

VHS tape decks for cutups
bringing kids in on Sunday, what were we thinking?
running the same play 6 times in row vs the same defense in the same spot on the field till its right
stopping practice to rant at a kid for 3 minutes while the rest of the teams picks daisy's
fall camp toughness drills
fall camp 3 a days
distance running as conditioning
static stretching
And most of all when I was young I used to look at people across the field or at clinics and be like "what a slappy, I could do so much better than him if I had that job". Now I'm just thankful for the job I have and the kids that I'm blessed to coach.

We cut plays, concepts, and formations out based on the talent at hand. We have not been pure 4 wide in 5 years. We are now running 21 personnel with an HB and TE. We dumped power read this past year because we didn't have the QB to run it. We dumped RPOs 2 years ago because our QB wanted to make all his decisions pre-snap no matter what. We dumped the Oregon midline out of the gun for the same reason. If we have the athletes that can run these plays, concepts, and formations, we will bring them back, but until then, they are out.

We don't run anymore on defensive days (Normally Wednesday). We want our guys busting their a$$ to get to the ball on every play, not saving themselves for after practice.

SCRAPPED:
Almost completely eliminated conditioning, except for in August, and even then it is brief
huddling during practice in regular season
Any complicated team or group drills (super-duper Oklahoma drills)
Static stretching
11-on-11 special teams (we do special teams Indy pods for every group to teach and improve skills, execute on air 2-3 times, done)
"Pre-practice"
Saturday's (no kids, no coach meetings)
Unorganized film sessions (everything is short hudl playlists)
Practicing Longer than 1:45 after mid-season
7v7 in practice (we almost exclusively run on air for install and timing, and then progress to various tactical passing drills like half-line or single-read)
Complicated call sheets for game day
Playbooks (informative PowerPoint manuals and hudl presentations instead)
Double sessions (we do a long night practice with a 20 minute break in August)
Straight-up scrimmages (except for a pre-season jamboree, everything is "joint practice" format now)
I'm sure I could think of more...

Pretty much everything Lochness said plus
Cut out all traditional tackling drills and sold out to Pete Carroll's Rugby Style drills. (zero concussions this year no noticeable drop off in tackling)
no practice pants
No Saturdays
3 total weeks off in summer

no oklahoma drill
no long distance conditioning
no oklahoma drill
no "toughness" drills
we also removed right and left from our formations to cut down om verbiage
all formations align to the right, and a word flips it
from a schematic standpoint i need to continue to trim some things
